I keep reading about how the SEC is the best football conference because top high-school kids want to play the best competition. Tell me which of these SEC members is great competition in football:
- Vanderbilt
- Kentucky
- Ole Miss
- Mississippi State
- South Carolina
That is almost half of the current conference. None of these teams has won the SECCG, only one (Ms. State) has been in it, and in the past 40 years, only one (Kentucky, '76) has won a share of the conference. The last of these members to win an outright SEC title was Ole Miss in 1963! Georgia Tech has more SEC championships than all of these teams combined, and they have been in the ACC since the 70's. Yes, USCe has only been here 2 decades, but with the coaching talent that has rolled through there, there is no excuse for them not winning the division at least once.
Not only are these teams not competitve in football, but they dont' bring major media attention on the football front (Ole Miss probably brings the most football attention, and Kentucky clearly is needed to keep b-ball relevent in the conference).
Here's my point - with all the conference expansion, is there any chance that the SEC decides to dump a few members in order to make room for better competition. Could you kick Vandy, Ms State, and South Carolina out, dropping down to 9 members, but creating room to add 7 teams for a 16-team super-conference?
