I thought we were just naming our favorite players. Criteria went out the window a while ago.

and this is how things spiral without a set criteria

agree...

Pm, HL, GC, JM were all Heisman fianalists...R White and D Adkins were....well...the best ever at this university!

We all love Al Wilson, P Price, J Kent, J Jones......ect......

But numbers retired???? Heath #21 as a runner up to the Heisman was better than any of them! he should be considered!

this is why you retire jerseys. To prevent this abomination.

Rick wasn't that bad. Not great, but not horrible. Especially in the game you chose to draw that picture from.

He performed up to the number "16" standard that night. One of the greatest comebacks in Vols history. We were down 24 points in Baton Rouge at the start of the 2nd half.

I know that at USC, the #55 was, at least under Pete Carroll, was special for the linebackers because if you were assigned that number, it meant you were the best of the LB corps.

Maybe Tennessee could assign #16 to the best player on the team.

Let me ask this question(I probably know the answer already, but I just want to see if there is a consensus)

If a former Vol player dies in combat in any war, should his number be automatically retired, regardless of whether he played or not?

I don't think so. Honor the sacrifice. Honor the commitment. Honor the memory. But that isn't "on the field" success. It should not reduce the recognition.

I find it disappointing that we can't retire a jersey for a player that has an immediate and lasting impact on the college program, but fails to have (or is injured and forced to retire early) a significant pro career.

You've gotta wonder if the strict NFL requirements weren't put in there specifically to keep Johnny Majors from being eligible.
Of course that will also apply to Fulmer. It also has kept Cafego and Suffridge from having numbers retired. Both of them also had professional careers disrupted by military service in WW2. Either of them should have numbers retired before Majors, Wilson, or others mentioned in this thread.

Yeah I remember but this is like the only picture I found of Rick playing that you could clearly see number 16.

Majors, Cafego, and Lauricella not having numbers retired is stupid!

Ron Simmons was the best football player ever at FSU and was a "can of corn" in the NFL.
His #50 is retired at FSU!

He was great at "Rasslin" DAMN!!!! (some will get that)

Nice. Retire the jersey of a guy who was arguably the 2nd best defensive tackle on his team.
