Who are the defensive minded HC candidates?

At Tennessee, getting fired from the Head Football Coach's job apparently pays better than getting hired as Head Football Coach. That fact alone may entice a potential big splash hire.

Patterson is consistently in my top 3. However I do not see him leaving TCU for the foreseeable future. Patterson is to TCU as Cutcliff is to Duke. He has a blank check to stay there the rest of his life. They were cellar dwellers and irrelevant for decades before he showed up. He's in the "name something after him" category at TCU, this comes from a guy who has an uncle who graduated from there and retired from Ft. Worth National Bank as a VP, who has heard things, me. Patterson at his age and place in life wanting to take on the challenge he would face at UT? I doubt it. He's smelling the roses.

I think Jeremy Pruitt could be a great hire great D.C. Has rings at multiple schools an absolute force in recruiting. His defenses have never finished worst than 15th and that was year one at Georgia. I think it could be a home run

Charlie Strong would be a better hire. Has a better track record of defenses in the SEC and can recruit South Florida better than anyone. Pruitt is a big gamble.

I don't disagree on strong but I doubt we'd go after him since he snubbed us last time. But if we got strong I'd be happy. Yes Pruitt is a gamble but he has spent 8 years under Saban and I'd imagine he'd have a similar plan like Kirby when he took over Georgia. I'm all aboard for a Defensive coach though whoever it may be.

Not coming here! He agreed to an interview before and never showed up! He isn't leaving TCU they are ranked #4 in the country and in a much easier conference to win since he never has to face Saban. This is a Pipedream! But he is a good Coach!

While I agree that he's not coming here, this would probably be easier to win at.
1-Our whole conference is down (due to the Saban effect) and the B12 is trending up and has a lot more parity (there are 8 teams who could beat each other on any given day). Plus on top of that you have to face Oklahoma, Texas, and Ok St yearly.
2-The B12 is where defensive coaches go to die (the Stoops effect) and Patterson and his D are doing ok in that conference, but really what you need is a good QB. Going to the SEC allows him to get more to his roots.
3-Tennessee is an easier place to get high level recruits and keep high level coaches.

Texas couldn't get Patterson out of TCU so I doubt we could entice him here, he seems settled in. I also would take Pruitt over Venables they are both gambles imo but Pruitt connection in the south and his history as a high school coach in Alabama along with his recruiting history as well as how good his units have performed tell me he will have a great defense here. Also interesting fact is this past off season he hired Jimmy Sexton as an agent so he is definitely looking to make the jump from coordinator to head ball coach. Yes he is an ass but I think he's got the personality that would fit in well here

Texas got their only target, nobody but Herman was getting that job. I assume Charlie Strong way up their list, if not #1, when that went down as well.

Okay that's fair let's just put it this way if Patterson was leaving TCU he would have left by now he also would have showed up to his meeting with us last time....

Just hire someone with some level of expertise on one side of the ball or another. Neither Dooley nor Butch has The offensive background knowledge to be a dominant OC in the SEC. Little wonder both failed as HC.

Bo Pelini is a defensive minded guy. Would he be good here? Idk.. I feel like we could get him on the cheap considering that's how we roll

Sounds like Shoop on defense before he came here.

If we can't outpay TCU, we have fallen. Before, he might have been the 6th or 7th best option, now he should be 1st or 2nd. You make solid points, but I believe if Tennessee makes a good presentation and a solid offer, we can get him. He has been on the cusp down there, but we have the resources and facilities to take him to the top.

he isn't top 2 on our board. No matter the money he doesn't want to coach at Tennessee. He has an easy job in an even easier conference since Stoops retired. Regardless of the money he would take a raise and even less than Tennessee offered to stay where he is. IMHO!

Patterson is in his 60s he is gonna die in the Big12
