Whittingham to Michigan?

Just such a crazy situation with both Whittingham and Campbell. Both of those guys, especially Campbell, were white-hot names for a long time as far as bigger schools poaching them, but when they remained at their schools for years people stopped talking about them leaving. Then they both leave back-to-back after odd/unexpected coaching searches.

There have been rumors UM knew about all about Moore and were waiting until after signing day to fire him. I wonder if there had been some preliminary contact with Wittingham before everything blew up publicly

The only hunky factor is if Michigan doesn’t pay Utah a buyout.

While I am under no illusions about the mechanics of big time college football, Whittingham has always kind of seemed to be a rather straight arrow. I don't recall Utah getting in any real NCAA troubles in the 20 years he was there.

Dealing with a school with a sitting head coach in place is going to be something most coaches steer pretty clear of. Just kinda one of those things that could destroy your reputation quickly. Now-the Brian Kellys and Kiffins of the world I don't think would really care, but Whittingham seems to have at least some self respect.

Reminds me of the time Memphis High School had to hire Tubby Smith to clean up a mess.

If Penny doesn't bench his 6-23 shooting son, Memphis may have to hire Tubby again for next year.

Great hire by Michigan. Whit has always been one of my favorite coaches, always felt he doesn’t get enough respect for what he’s done at Utah. He should stabilize things and they can then move on to the next guy. It’s arguably the best scenario for them, realistically speaking.

But, such BS for Penn State and Michigan to run the most incompetent coaching searches imaginable, and then stumble into gold. Both those programs deserve to become irrelevant.

I hate it that they got him. IMO he’s an excellent coach. He did very well at Utah and he likely will at Michigan. I wanted them to suck for 5 years. Now they probably won’t

Michigan seems to be one of those schools “falling up the ladder”.

I believe this is a helluva hire for them. We’d ended up with Derek Fooley.

Fun fact: he was a finalist for the job I think after Fulmer was fired. Mike Hamilton blew him off and when Kiffin left wouldn’t respond to us, much like Gary Patterson.

He's the one guy other than Mullen I wanted us to throw big money at after Butch was canned and before Schiano Sunday happened.
