White Whale

What's up with this 'offensive minded' thing? The top two coaches in the league are defensive minded.

Why is an offensive minded coach a selling point?

Weak minds like flashy things. They want scoreboards lighting up like pinball machines. It damages their psyches when a defense tells an offense it's not happening.

Actually, it's far more entertaining to watch a defense unravel somebody's carefully choreographed offense. The offense goes on the field with the objective to successfully carry out a planned play. The defense has to be smarter to sniff out the play, react to it, and shut it down - just more to it, more interesting, but it requires more objectivity to enjoy the defensive effort.

According to Swain two coaches from the power 5 (not on the Vegas odds list) have called about the head coaching job. If we don't land the white whale Gruden, who would you want as the next head coach that's not on the list?
Jon Gruden **+150
Chip Kelly **+450
Jeff Brohm **+600
Bobby Petrino **+600
Mike Norvell **+800
PJ Fleck **+1000
Bob Stoops **+1200
Tee Martin **+1200
Les Miles **+1400
Jim Bob Cooter **+2200
Dan Mullen **+2200
Brian Kelly **+3300
Lane Kiffin **+3300
Peyton Manning **+10000

It’s Gruden but my other favorite would Bob Stoops!

1. What the heck is the white whale?
2. You can take Gruden, Manning, Kiffen and Petrino off the list

Didn't see any response to this post in a casual browsing.

A white whale is a reference to Moby Dick and Captain Ahabs obsession with catching him. Gruden definitely seems to the white whale around here.

I cannot see Fisher even remotely a possibility. $40 million dollar buyout.

Not saying its Jimbo but if it is him then the 40 million buyout is if he gets fired. If he leaves the buyout is probably smaller, way smaller. Plus given his 2-5 record and tussles with AD there, they might want to negotiate the buyout too. No reason to keep a coach if he doesn't want to be there.

Gruden is the guy....he has to finish MNF through Dec. 25th....it will be announced probably on November 27th with an assembled staff of NFL coaches once Jones is fired on November 26th....we will be an NFL mini-league program like Alabama is now or USC was when Pete Carroll was there....so itso facto Gruden is the $10,000,000 white whale rocking Tennessee orange Power T's on his chest and back.

Lol

I honestly think we need to take a look at Kiffin again. He has a grudge to go after both Saban and Smart, our two biggest rivals.
He knows he screwed up leaving the first time and is unlikely to make same mistake twice.
Just imagine seeing this sign at the Tennessee/Alabama game.....

HEY NICK...... I F.....ED YOUR DAUGHTER!!!

Rumors says TAMU. Probably more likely than Petersen. If it was worth Swain mentioning it's a big fish (not on the list)...Jim Bo wanting a raise.

Okay, but can you explain the allegorical relevance of the white whale in regard to the human condition, or, if you like, to the American sociopolitical sphere, both at the time of publication and, in a more timeless sense, in today’s world? And then relate that to VolNation as a microcosm of a dystopic cultural parallel with football as a thematic underpinning?

Just wondering.

I don't understand the Jimbo hype. Would not even be in my top 10.

81-22
bowl game every year at FSU with a 5-2 record
3 straight division titles
1 NC
1 undefeated season
averages about 11 wins a year
finished in top 10 4 times in 7 years, top 25 every year
produced a heisman winner
48-16 conference record
multiple AA's
multiple players sent to the NFL

Tell me how he wouldnt be in your top 10?

Agreed, as a defensive player in HS I always wanted to see a war that ended in the single digits. My goal was always to hit someone, then look into the stands and see his mother weeping. Then I knew I had done my job. So I like to see the same in games I watch too.

I'm basing this off the fact that Swain had three main hints

1) He thinks either of the guys that have reached out would be home run hired from Power 5 schools.

2) Jimmy Sexton connection

3) Offensive minded.

He was just the first guy to come to mind. But you're right, UT can't touch a $40 million buyout.

Possibly Kevin Sumlin.
