I have been told that a potential orange helmet would only be worn with white uniforms on the road because of the potential for it to appear to be a different orange then the home jersey. For a long time, it wasn’t considered a possibility at all because it wouldn’t match, but the current bunch doesn’t see it as big of a problem as previous regimes did.
Danny White’s external operations folks have put together a branding guideline for all of the teams to follow. It says alternate uniforms are not to be worn against rivals or win championships are on the line. So you won’t be seeing Tennessee baseball in black in a tournament championship again. You won’t see the lady vols wearing the Summitt blue alternates against Connecticut or South Carolina. I don’t anticipate that applying to pants, but I would not expect an alternate helmet to be worn against Alabama.
