The thing about Whistle Pig ($90 per 750ml in my neck of the woods) is that they made butt-oodles of rye whiskey before Mad Men kicked up consumption. So, they left it aging in barrels for ten years. Yeah, it's decent whiskey, but Rye whiskey doesn't benefit from extended aging like Scotch or Irish Whiskey.
Redemption Rye is damn near perfect rye whiskey for a little less than $30 per 750ml bottle.

I disagree. The Lock, Stock & Barrel 16 Year Rye is killer, in part because of how long it had time to interact with the barrels. True, it uses new barrels like bourbon as opposed to Scotch which requires used barrels. So I guess, in that respect, it doesn't take as much flavor from the barrel itself. But the barrel acts more as a mellower for ryes, and that doesn't mean it isn't benefiting.
Bourbon: Four Roses Single Barrel
TN Whiskey: Corsair Triple Smoke
Scotch: Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban or Laphroaig (if he will do a heavily peaty/medicinal Scotch)
All of the above are in the $40-60 range
Well, you also spend heavily for rye that's been collecting dust in barrels. Maybe your tastebuds are damaged.![]()

I've actually only forked over for 1 bottle. Jefferson's Ocean Cask (Voyage 7). I'm the bar manager at a restaurant with whiskey lounge. I taste most things that are offered to us. That's why I've gotten to taste most of what I've had.
As for Talisker, I've never thought its level of peat matched those from Islay
