Which kicker do we go with?

Flip a coin. One kicker has some makes the other has 0.

Going to interject some facts here:

Medley is 2 of 3 on FGs this season, and 16/16 on XPs.
Cimaglia is 1 of 4 on FGs.

Medley this season has hit from 27 and 40, missed from 44.
Cimaglia has hit from 51, missed from 45, 47, and 51.

One of the reasons Cimaglia is 1 of 4 on FGs is because he only gets a chance to try when the distance is 45 yards or farther. The other reason is that he's young (true Freshman), just settling in to the college game.

It's not apples to apples. Give the young man a break, he's taking all the tough shots. He'll settle down and be an outstanding kicker for us.

And other than him getting settled in, the division of responsibilities between the two kickers is actually working pretty well.

Thanks for the correction, your info show's a lack of confidence in a senior if the FG is 40+.

I've never seen a kicker hit as many posts as Medley. Those uprights must look like they're 20 feet wide each when he lines up to kick. UT should install a goalpost upright that sits 5 yards behind the endzone, but directly in the middle of the actual goal posts. Then camouflage those so Medley can't see them. Leg strength has never been the problem for him. It's all in the head.

Medley has the yipes, just like a golfer. It boils down to confidence. It is mental with him and it will continue to be. Thanks for being a VFL. But we must go in a different direction.

I was thinking of a Bullseye, but that might work better. Hold up a target that looks like a soccer goal(I know how Volnation loves them some soccer.).

Go Vols!

He kicks almost all good kicks. They are just wide enough to either bounce off bad or just barely miss.

His kicks usually are hit pure. They just, "Missed by that much.".

Have we had a kicking coach since Cafego?
It used to be a strength of our team but now the kids are just left on their own to figure it out. It seems like some previous kickers worked with Medley one year and he improved - but he's regressed again

Cimaglia. We know what Medley is after 3+ years. Put the youngster out there and let him build confidence through experience. With his first career kick from 51 yards in the Swamp, he did something Medley has never been able to do in his career here. Go with Cimaglia and don't look back imo.

Ftr, Fuad Reveiz said Saturday that he hates the rotating kickers thing, it's not good for either guy....pick one and let him be the man until he shows that he's just not the guy.

I agree with this. Cimaglia is capable of hitting all FGs, including 50+. Medley has had years to show he isn't. Let Cimaglia have all the FGs to build confidence with the shorter, so he can be more accurate with the longer. Medley can stick with the PATs and KOs.

Doesn't matter which one starts. It's like Alien vs. Predator: No matter who wins, we lose.

Why would Medley kick off when the freshman has the bigger leg? Wasn't it Medley who kicked the ball out of bounds after our late FG against florida, thereby giving them very good field position to start their last (game-winning) drive?

Sort of. But really, more a recognition of who's good at what.

We say all the time that we want our coaches to take advantage of what our players can do, pattern the calls to their abilities.

Well, here's a perfect example of them doing that. Medley is absolutely clutch inside of 40 yards. Just as dependable as sunrise. So let's take advantage of that rock-steady dependability.

Meanwhile, Cimaglia has a stronger leg, and can (sometimes) make the longer attempts that Medley never could. So when the distance gets long, give it to the youngster. Which is what the coaches are doing.

In short, they're doing almost exactly what we've been demanding they do; use the players in ways that maximize success.

[the only question is, why draw the boundary at 45 yards...Medley is clutch out to about 40-42, not beyond. why not make 42 the line between them? Cimaglia may have made that 44-yarder the other day that Medley missed]

Me. Medley is close to 90% inside of a 40 yard attempt.

Exactly. I think he's actually even better than 90% from 40 and closer.

No, Medley's last kickoff of the game was a touchback. It did not leave the field of play, was not a penalty.

In fact, a quick glance at the play-by-play shows Medley kicked off five times during the Florida game. None of them went out of bounds, far as I could see.

But still, I share your question about why Cimaglia isn't kicking off, at least sometimes, sharing the duties to get experience. Maybe it's because he isn't as good at keeping it in the field of play? Dunno. Been wondering about that.
