I am 28 and have been a Volunteer since I heard the roar of Neylan Standium while I was still in the womb. Around the age of 11 I started studying our football Team, Our roster and truly becoming a student of the game and the Volunteers. I keep up with players, X's and O's, Look at our opponents strengths and weaknesses, along with everything else a die hard fan does. I got to thinking last night about who does JRM remind me of since I started really studying the game. This name immediately came to my mind and I want Vol Nation to give me their thoughts on wich VFL JRM reminds them of the most on the field. My player comparison is Raynoch Thompson! One of my all time favorites as a kid growing up. Fluid, Fast, Vioelnt, Emotional Leader, and Flexible at the OLB position. Who does JRM reminds you of the most my fellow Vol Nation??

I think JRM is setting his own standard. He is even more consistent than Raynoch.

Agreed, especially if you take his off the field work eithic, legacy, and the change in culture he has created on the hill. Strictly his play on the field...Who would you go with?

JRM is one tough player, similar to Raynoch but overall better IMHO. He has super instincts and is a student of the game as well as being a great athlete. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

To me he is a hybrid player: Leonard Little & Dale Jones. Both were hard-hitters with great football instincts. Little was listed as a DE but often was deployed like a OLB. Reeves-Maybin is fantastic, & Vol fans are thrilled he decided to return for his senior year

His closing speed and knack for getting to the football is eye opening. The speed we have on the field is impressive. Whether we win or not, CBJ has gotten us a lot of talent.

Raynoch came to mind first, but Omar Gaither also played alot like JRM.

Omar was instinctive, played fast, and hit like a truck.

These are the first two that came to my mind as well. JRM is probably more like Gaither than Raynoch.

I honestly would say Al Wilson.

He is the team leader, is an in state guy, always seems to be around the football, makes big tackles, ect.

The only thing he lacks that Al did was all the turnovers it seemed Al was able to force that would win the game.

A lot of that legacy for Al though came in his final season which JRM still gets to play.

I won't be shocked if he's right up there next to Al after this season (if we do have a truly special year).

For me it's Gaither. If I had to choose one. JRM is his own player though. I'm going to miss him being here.

The moment I saw the title of the thread I had the same thought. We haven't really had someone exactly like JRM. He's a rare breed. Boy are we lucky to have him and Kirkland roaming the middle this year!
Great question btw (What, couldn't you think of some recruiting issue to complain about?)

All American Keith Delong smarts who led the Vols in tackles 1988 and 2 time all American Jackie Walker all over the field instincts and slightly small for a LB.

I can't think of anyone who is truly enough like JRM to merit the comparison. He is unique.

It's only a pity that early in his life, he didn't get the nickname Lion King for that mane of hair. Woulda been a cool one.

Go JRM! Go Vols!

JRM a better tackler than Raynoch was. Raynoch was a much bigger hitter though. His collisions were with wreckless abandon. JRM is a little better in pass coverage. I would point to Eric Westmoreland as more similar which that's pretty good player too.
