Gruden or Stoops?

I've seen both lobbied for on here, and I (personally) think both are pipe dreams. Stoops has great stability at OU, Gruden has a posh job in the booth.

Not to say that they won't, but I just don't see either happening IMO. I just want to find out what side of the fence people are on with just these two.

Honestly Stoops is a longer shot to get him away from OU and to UT than getting Gruden out of the broadcaster booth.

If Gruden wanted to get into Collegiate coaching there won't be a better shot at a historic Top 10 program than right now at UT. He'll recognize, as many others do, that our problem isn't talent... it's coaching and especially playcalling.

I think Gruden's comments regarding the rigors of the NFL are true. As an NFL HFC you don't have nearly as much administrative control as you do when you're an NCAA HFC. With the NFL you have the Owner and GM to contend with. Some owners/GMs let the HFC set draft/FA orders but others will do it themselves and the HFC is just there to coach.

The Glazers/Bruce Allen might have destroyed any will Gruden might have had to coach in the NFL.

Again, if Gruden wanted to get into college coaching there won't be a better chance. It will come down to him wanting in and mostly Hart (unlike Hamilton) opening up the checkbook.

I agree with some of the previous posters. There is no chance we get either of these and to even think we have a shot is foolish. We got Louisiana techs coach our last time

Why would Stoops leave OU for Tennessee ??? Much easier competition and easier to win in that conference.

I like the Gruden choice for one main reason. Maybe he could step in sooner unless his ESPN contract would prevent it.

Gruden might could at least be announced as next coach before his contract is up.

Why would it be foolish? UT has the best facilities, spends a ton on recruiting, has a rabid fanbase, and is in the SEC.

We got Dooley because we had an AD that was in a panic. I don't beleive for 1 second, and a true UT fan shouldn't, that Tennessee is a dream destination for a top tier coach.

With Hart comming from Alabama he seen what paying a big time coach does for the university. Saban pays for himself, When you hire a big time coach you go to the big bowls and get the big money. Hart knows this he will do what is right to get Tennessee back to the top of things.

One of the most intelligent post made. Exactly right.

You don't believe (so you agree with my point)? Let's be real and not delusional here. We had all those things you mentioned with both of our previous two coaching hires and still got turned down by a list of "top tier" guys.

We had a depleted roster. Not any more.

So you think a top tier coach before said oh man they had a depleted roster, im not going there. And now all the sudden wants to come? I'm just trying to be more realistic given the state of our program. Its like every week when people say they think we are gonna beat the bamas Georgias Floridas etc

Stoops, without a doubt.

I've viewed Gruden as a "pipe dream", but reports that he's interested in coaching again may make it less of one than I thought. Still not sure he'd want to coach college, when he could easily get an NFL job, but at least there's an outside chance.

I can't see any reason whatsoever why Stoops would come to Tennessee. Not putting UT down, but Oklahoma has just as rich of a history (if not richer) than us. Moreover, we're probably offering comparable salaries. So what does Stoops get by coming to UT? There's really nothing in it for him, unless he has a great desire to start all over.

Stoops is a stretch but Gruden is a bigger stretch cause I don't see him coaching anywhere. Especially in college.

This is what I keep telling myself too. I believe this to be true.

Hire Petrino. We make sure he knows how to handle a bike with a rider and he will be good to go.

Where is the "neither is coming" option? Why would Gruden come to Knoxville anyway? He makes a reported $4.3M a year with zero pressure and has one of the best jobs in broadcasting. He's been quoted as saying he absolutely loves it and aspires to becoming one of the best. He makes a ton of money and he's still involved with the sport he loves. UT has to pay significant buyout $$$'s to Dooley and the staff, the AD has a $4M revenue deficit, and we've never been known to hire anyone with large contracts. It just doesn't make sense. The idea of Stoops is even crazier. He owns the Big 12 and Texas and probably will as long as he's there. He also makes $4.3M.
