if you are only coming out for the weekend oakland is by far the better choice. much smaller airport, fewer delays, and closer to the cal campus. if you plan on touring SF and staying in SF, SFO is the obvious choice. Both have access to bart which goes right to the cal campus.

Umm ontrario is 400 miles from Berkeley.

edit: if you plan on going to LA beforehand I strongly suggest getting a southwest ticket from LAX to Oak and not do the drive. The traffic is brutal. Unless you are willing to take 10 hours and do PCH.

Is it generally any cheaper to fly into Oakland?

We've got a small group that's going to fly in, rent a van, and immediately head south for a few days down to the Sierra Nevada. We're going to spend the game weekend in SF, but I figured we'd be dumping the van off when we got back into the city anyway and taking BART around.

sounds like a good plan. I went to Truckee for the first time last year. Nice mountain country.

It's is generally cheaper to fly into oakland, but there are a lot more flights into SFO. Sounds like you'd be better off flying into SFO. You can take bart from San Francisco to SFO at the end of your trip. And bart from San Francisco to and from the game.

Thanks. SFO would obviously be easier; if it's not that big a difference price-wise, we'll probably just stick with it. I ask because sometimes it makes a huge difference, and until I saw this thread it hadn't really occurred to me to think about flying into Oakland instead.

Oakland is the only way to go. Getting back across the bay from San Fran really sux.

what about San Jose? i've flown in there several times......seems easy enough to get in and out.

i guess though the traffic getting from SJO to berkley could be really bad........i seem to remember being stuck on the road for about 2 hours to just get to Madesto.

and if you are going to stay over a few days, gotta do San Fran, Nappa, Montarey Bay etc....great, great area.

san jose is a long drive. i wouldn't do it unless it's a lot cheaper. it would certainly be better than sacramento though.

In general, I would say Oakland is the best bet, followed by San Francisco. San Jose airport works fine (about 1 hour from Berkeley with moderate traffic), as long as you're not doing it during rush hour. However, if you are flying out of Nashville, you can often get good prices on tickets to either Oakland or San Jose (try Southwest and United). Also, Sacramento will work, with probably a 1.5-2 hour drive to Berkeley. If you are wanting to go to the Sierra Nevada (i.e. Tahoe and region), then Sacramento would be ideal as it is between Berkeley and Tahoe. I have regularly flown out of all of these airports (Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento) going to Knoxville and back and they all work fine. It's just a matter of whether you mind a bit of a drive. If so, Oakland and San Francisco are the closest to Berkeley.
