Which 4 players will be starting in the secondary vs. Cal?

Berry will start as will at least one of the JUCOs. The coaches, specifically Chavis, have said many times that Berry will start against Cal. I'd say McKenzie will start as well. The other CB spot will be between Johnson, Gaines, and Willingham.

I think both the JuCo's will start. You don't bring in two big-time JuCos like that and have them sit.

I trust you on this, but I want to read it myself.

If our DL and LB corps would still beat the shxx out of their OL, I don't care how many Jackson they have and who will start on our secondary. But I seriously doubt it. I would say:
CB: Willingham
CB: Johnson
FS: Hefney
SS: Mckenzie

Forgetting about the defensive backfield for a sec, their OL is pretty good. They have an All-American candidate at Center in Mack and experience up front. Our DE's are going to have to put some pressure from the outside and Boldeon/Mapu need to stuff the run against Forsett. If our run defense is like it was in the middle of the season last year, Forsett will have a field day and that'll open up Jackson to be running free down the field. Making them one-dimensional like last year is so critical.

Hi VN,

I'm a Cal alum and I've been following the Cal-Tenn threads for about 3 months now and I must say, you guys have a good thing going here, definitely some intelligent CFB fans who know what they are talking about.

I picked Cal to blow out Tenn a year ago simply because I felt that our offense would be too good to contain. I won't make the same mistake this year. Yes, Longshore will be more experienced and we will have home field. But having watched all the Cal games last year, Cal's offense could very well be even MORE overhyped than last year. Our OL will be pretty good this year, but they were also pretty good last year. Get pressure on Longshore and he will make mistakes. He has ZERO speed so he will have to either throw the ball away or force the ball. Let him drop back 4 steps and give him time to look at his second option and he will pick your D apart. That was the main reason for his success last year after the Tenn game. Give him time to throw and it would be hard to find a more accurate and consistent passer in CFB. Cal also had a very balanced offense last year. All our losses last year came from an ineffective run game and we became one-dimensional. So I think most of VN hit the nail when they say stopping the run is key. If you put all the pressure on Longshore to make plays, AND THEN pressure him when he drop back to pass, then we are in big trouble.

So I guess the big Q is can your DL put enough pressure on Longshore without the blitz? I think blitzing would be too much of a gamble considering your DB's are inexperienced and out WR's are pretty good. I don't follow your team so can someone tell me about your DL and the depth chart etc?

Welcome to the board . . . Great first post.

Our d-line is a big question mark going into next season. With Turk McBride and Justin Harrell gone, we definitely have depth and experience issues.

DE: Xavier Mitchell SR. Best DE we have
DE: Antonio Reynolds SR. Pretty good pass rusher
DT: J.T. Mapu SR. Should have solid year
DT: Demonte Bolden JR. He's a monster

All are pretty quick, and will be fun to watch in the fall.

Parys Haralson was drafted after the 05 season. I think you mean Harrell.

DE's are Seniors, but had very little sacks last year, which concerns me because we have to find some outside pressure. DT's are decent, Bolden is good but hasn't play an entire season starting. Mapu is a good run-stuffer, Dan Williams may be the best of the group but hasn't play muched. Donald Langley will prob. see some time there too. Lot of inexperience and little production from upper-classmen.

Hustin Jarrell?

Yeah, the key isn't just stopping the run - it's stopping the run with as little manpower as we can. If it takes 6 guys (4 DL and 2 LBs) to effectively shut down Forsett/Montgomery/et al, then we're in trouble.

cal dline pressure and run stopping will determine the game IMO. welcome. good to see another cal alumn.

I will only be worried about our defense if our offense has trouble scoring, which they will if we cannot find a run game and if Longshore is getting consistently pressured by Tenn's DL (like he was last year). Tenn's offense putting up points on Cal's D will be much less of a problem if Cal is scoring more often. Remember, everyone is talking about Cal's offense, not our D, it would be kind of disappointing (for Cal fans) if the O doesn't show up.

Fulmer and co. mentioned the Berry thing at a football banquet a couple months ago and a few people that have talked to Chief since have said that he said it directly. At first, at the banquet, they said he would. Then Fulmer backed up and said there was a good possibility. They plan on him starting and they wouldn't bring in big JUCOs to sit the bench, as mentioned.

Cal will have to prove they can run the ball. It doesnt matter who covers Jackson. If they are one dimensional Cal will get beat.

We won 9 games last year being one dimensional. Arkansas also was pretty good being one dimensional. It wont if they cant run if they can pass for 300+ against our green secondary.
