I think the original plan for the thanks system was that posters could "thank" posts that they thought contained enlightening or relevant info and the posts with the most thanks could be searched on as a way to separate the wheat from the chaff.I still don't understand how you could abuse it. Ultimately there were a lot of, shall we say, less than enlightening posts that were receiving a lot of thanks. Some even registered duplicate identities as a way to "thank pad" their own posts.
That is my understanding of why vol_freak scrapped the experiment.
