Where would you rank the Pearlster?

By SMVTT's standards, we should all bow at the altars of Herb Magee and Mike Dunlap.

By SMVTT's standards, coaching at Carson Newman is the same as coaching at North Carolina. That makes sense.

Pearl basically came in and sold UT fans the bball program. There may be better X's and O's coaches out there, but I don't know many coaches that could come in and put energy back into a program that if it wasn't dead, it was on life support. He got fans excited about basketball again. So I don't know how you rank something like that.

Tennessee when Bruce Pearl took over was in much better shape than UMASS when Cal took over, UCONN when Calhoun took over, UC when Huggins took over, and UTEP and A&M were when Gillispie took over. It's not like what Pearl has done is unprecedented.

I think the point is that several of the other coaches would not have had to sell the program. It would have taken off just because of who they are.

My goodness... why can't we just appreciate finally having a coach on campus that can at least put a product out there that we can be proud of without trying to compare him to Cal, Pitino, or Roy Williams? I realize winning is the name of the game, but this program has been dogmeat for long stretches of the last 20 years.

Even though these guys have a tendency to blow leads and miss free throws, I still like the fact that Pearl gets the maximum out of these guys. I don't care where Pearl ranks with other coaches, to be quite honest. I'm just glad he's here taking my mind off of that tail spinning program on Shields-Watkins Field...

Well I'm not a fan of those teams, so I can't comment. I have been a fan of UT and I know what the state of the program was like. So while he may have not set the precedent, he is to be congratulated. That's why I'm not sure how you can compare that to other teams, it's all relative.

And I'm glad he's here.

I'm not the one who started this "rank the coach" thread. However, when people choose to do so, everyone's resume becomes relevant.

Also, there's other factors... I know one of the reasons Kevin left was because of Dickey. You can be the greatest coach on earth, but if it's not a good fit, then it really doesn't matter.

Agreed, but he's only been at UT for 2-1/2 seasons. He'll have that SEC title this year and hopefully much more.

Let's pose a different question. Instead of ranking, what coach out there would you trade for Pearl?
Pitino - No
Matta - maybe
Gillespie (sp) - No
Huggins - Heyall No
K - maybe
Roy Williams - No
Donovan - maybe
Behlein (sp) - No
Self - No
Olson - No
Boheim - No way

None of the others come close IMO.
You would maybe trade Pearl for Thad Matta??? That makes absolutely no sense.

all I know is that I'm glad we got him. I wasn't that fired when we first hired him but i'am sure happy we did, now we just need to do what it takes to keep him

as a Bama fan I will trade you MG for BP any day, he is at least the 2nd best coach in the sec and the best interview i have ever heard.

I would take Pearl over K and Donnovan based on personality alone. Didn't he win 2 NC's at Southern Indiana? This guy is special. If we ever lose him Hammy should be fired.

I don not know that I would take Peal over K or Donovan right now, based upon resume. I love Pearl's personality, which, along with his wins here, has done a lot to put UT Men's Basketball on the map. However, K and Donovan both have multiple National Championships at the Division I level. However, give Pearl twenty more years and I think he retires from UT with a couple more NCAA Championships on his resume.

SEC titles-Zero
National titles-Zero
Final Fours-Zero

I love the guy, but to this moment he has not produced anything to stake a top 25 claim to.

can't argue with ur facts........but the fact that we even r excited about men's basketball says it all....he ranks high on my list!!!! GO VOLS
