If you ask any Vol fan including your truly Bruce Pearl is no less than a god for Tenn. basketball.
So it is hard to be objective in your view of Pearl if you are judging his worth on a NCAA basketball scale.

Question- Where would you put him in the macro view of coaches in college today? Is he top 10? Top 25?
Are we going to be in danger of a Kansas, UNC top tier type team stealing him away?

SEC titles-Zero
National titles-Zero
Final Fours-Zero

I love the guy, but to this moment he has not produced anything to stake a top 25 claim to.

Yes but he is the best coach to never win a major conference title.

mortal with flaws like the rest of us, I would rate him as a top 10 coach right now.

If we don't find somebody to sink a 3 next year, his popularity will diminish IMO.

Top Ten?...

Coach K
Roy Williams
Bob Knight
Bill Self
Rick Barnes
Jim Boeheim
Bob Huggins
Thad Matta
John Calipari
Rick Pitino...

I'm not ready to place the man above any of these yet. He's a fine coach, and again I'm glad he's our coach. But you must win titles in this game. I believe he will, but he hasn't yet.

Fine's question asked for a big picture view. So lets be honest.

And you didn't even list Gary Williams, Billy G, Kelvin Sampson, Jay Wright, Billy Donovan off the top of my head.

I was joking with my earlier comment... but say he wins the SEC this year and get to the elite 8, where does that put him?

I think he is toward the top in the second tier coaches probably.

I love Pearl, but there is more he needs to accomplish before being in the top 10, but I guarantee any school in the country would hire him if he were open.

I dont think Billy G or Kelvin Sampson are better than pearl. I know Billy G won round 1 but i would still much rather have pearl than him right now.

Pearl is the man. Period.

He took a bunch of cast-offs and low talent kids to an SEC East Championship in his first year. He went 3-1 against the national champions. He went undefeated at home last year. He has a winning record against ranked teams and has taken Tennessee basketball in uncharted territory (W-L record and rank).

He has created a respect and enthusiasm for Tennessee that I didn't think possible. We are relevant and very good.

He already has done plenty. The championships are coming. I wouldn't trade him for the world.

My knowledge on college BB is admittedly average, but what has Rick Barnes won?

Also, I believe Pearl has won titles. And he is on his way to another right now.

One or two final fours and I think a Big 12 championship (2005?).

I would rather have Pearl too. But Sampson has been to a FF and Elite 8 and won the Big 12 so I could see the argument for him.

Not to mention he has taken an undersized team and turned them into rebounders. We've easily won the boards the last several games against bigger teams other than FL. I could be wrong but it seems the FT shooting has improved as of late also. My only complaint would be we give up too many easy layups when we press. I think against some teams we should back off the press. Pearl will start to get a lot of instate talent; remember he came too late to get Jamont Gordon. He did eventually get Tyler and J.P. though.Tenn. produces a lot of good players. He'll hang some banners, don't worry.

There's absolutely no way someone can call Jay Wright a better coach than Bruce Pearl with a straight face.

Im with you on Jay Wright. Scottie Reynolds would have to score 94 points alone for them to have a chance against us.

replace Thad Matta with Billy Donovan and if we are talking about active coaches then eddie sutton is in there even though he is well past his prime

In terms of accomplishments, he is our second best coach after Mears, but in ability, charisma, leadership, and PR for UT, he is the best we have had. Nationaly, he still has to attain some titles to be rated top 10, but using my criteria, he is knocking on the door and potentially can be eventually one of the elite coaches. I cannot agree any school in the country would want him, but any school looking to change should want him.

I would say he is on the verge of breaking into the top 10. He is just now in a position to make a run at being one of the best and time will tell. I say 4 or 5 years from now there will be no doubt that he is a top 10 coach.

THERE IS NOT A COACH I WOULD RATHER HAVE, PERIOD!!!!! There may be better ones out there, but I would not trade Pearl for any of them. His personality has a lot to do with it, plus he can obviously coach.
