Where would we be if we had beaten LSU in '01?

I was thinking about this earlier today. If we had beaten LSU in '01 and gone on to the national title, would we still have Fulmer? Do you think his decline still would have happened?

I'm thinking that the game would pass him by regardless, but maybe we would have held onto him longer. Or maybe he would have gotten better assistants or recruits with his success.

And another thing, do you think we had a chance in the national championship that year?

Most would say Miami was more the more talented team that year, but the most talented team doesn't always win the game...Who knows..Fulmer wouldn't have gotten canned if he'd won a NC in 99 or 01. Disappointment or blessing in disguise?

Well, I dont know if Phil woulda still been around, but I would feel a lot better about the $1200 I spent on tickets/hotel and travel to Atlanta that year....

Our 2001 team was a very talented team, and yes I do believe we would have won the National Title... We came into the SECCG that year just a week after beating Florida. Hard to duplicate those type of emotions twice. Also, the thumping we put on Michigan that year in the bowl game was arguable our best bowl performance, so I definitely think we could have won the National Title...

And yes, he would still be our coach because with winning two national titles we would not have had the drought of recruits that we had in the 2000s....

If Fulmer had won 2 Naional Championchips, he might still be here, or fired after this season. Not sure.

That game was just an unfortunate upset to an up and coming team and coach. That really had nothing to do with Fulmer's decline.

Fulmer got lazy. He didnt recurit like he should have. When Urban and Nick got in the SEC it all changed. You have to step up recurting to keep up with Florida and Alabama. They have had the top classes the last few yrs, so it dont get any eaisier

Not Sure but Michigan sure wasnt the same as Miami. But I definitely think we would have Canes a better game than Nebraska who didnt even win the Big 12.

We would likely gotten destroyed by Miami by a similar margin as Nebraska, and we probably wouldn't be in a different situation today.

Is there some kind of a conspiracy between you and Knoxvillain to see how many times you can start a thread on the same topic?

True, but I don't think Florida was too far down on the talent pool compared to Miami. Again, it is just speculation, but I would have liked our chances. I still think we were a top 3 team that year and arguably better than the 1998 team. We were 48 seconds away from being undefeated (stupid prevent defense against Georgia) going into the sec championship game. And had beaten lsu by a good margin in Kelley wagington's record breaking performance earlier in the year. Of course, all of this was before the second had the type of parity it has now so who knows if things would be different now if we had won in 2001. If anything, I think Fulmer may have retired rather than being fired.

The topic isn't the same, yet similar. Not my fault the guy can't read and see if a topic on a very similar subject has already been created...

Hindsight is 20/20 why even worry about what happened back in 2001 you can't cange it think about the present and the furture

Fulmer's legacy is an enigma: he seems to be remembered for the games he lost rather than the games he won. Certainly, winning that SECCG propels Fulmer into Legend rather than "just" Hall-of-Famer.

But I'll take you one farther. What if we don't call that stupid bootleg with Eric Ainge in the first half against Notre Dame......

Fulmer would still be here if Eric doesn't get hurt then.

It is all the terrorists fault, if not for Sept. 11, we would have played Florida much earlier, then we would not have been too tired for the SECCG:alien:

Things would be different, who knows how. But that game was the pivotal moment in revealing and determining where our program went. Its hard not to think the decade would have gone in a slightly different direction.

Who cares. Fulmer didn't win an SEC championship in the last 10 years, so he needed to go. Seriously, that is ridiculous. If he couldn't do that he didn't deserve to stay. Thanks for the good times Phil. See ya!
