Where to tailgate?

I've been to 6 games and have allways tailgated on Cumberland street (I think at Schlotzkys Deli). For the first time, my group is bringing the wives, and I'd like to find somewhere a little nicer. I don't mind paying to park and but would love an area a little closer to the stadium, perhaps with grass, or somewhere to throw the ball around, maybe even a scenic view lol.... Anyone have any suggestions?

yeah, become a donor and get a parking pass.

otherwise, you're stuck parking anywhere you can find off campus. the Strip is your best bet.

I was thinking that this past Saturday as well, however it's my 30th b-day and I'm making the trip regardless....

I'm going to the game this weekend too. I was told behind O'Charleys is a pretty good place to tailgate. Don't know if there is any grass or not? Get there early too! See ya there if you make it.

Professors seem to preferential parking.Maybe try that.:)Realistically though the good spots are gone as far as I know unless you have a parking pass.

I always tailgate behind where you pay student parking fines for the USC game. $20 bucks I think, parking lot. But it has always been fun.

This is just a suggestion to consider: Downtown, around Market Square, is very nice, with trees and shade and free street parking nearby. IMO, Market Square is KV's gem, undiscovered by many from out of town. Restaurants and bars nearby. The Mast General Store nearby would likely appeal to the wives. And it's not that bad of a walk to the stadium. Since you'll (presumably) be coming in from the East, it will be easier to head out after the game. Some of the Knoxvillians on here might be able to tell you better, but I don't think KPD enforces the parking meters on gameday Saturdays. At least, they haven't me.

The staff/faculty spots are sold to donors, etc every weekend. So unless they are paying extra for one of those spots they aren't getting them either. The only people who get to keep their spots are the people with non-commuter hangtags.

it's a lot longer of a walk to the stadium from Market Square than you are estimating.

the best bet is the Strip.

Thanks, but it's no estimate. I do it often. It's a walk but it's not that bad if it's a pretty fall day. I mean, I'm presuming he's young and up for a little walking after driving all the way from Charleston.

We don't ever tailgate, but we always park in Tyson. Beautiful scenery, and not crowded usually. There are normally a few tailgators, but plenty of room for more.

now that is a good idea and not much further than the Strip.

I understand. I hated to notify the masses of a nice, barely discovered (by out of towners) site but he seems like a nice fellow. I'll just keep enjoying it myself.

Market Square and Tyson Park are just about the same distance from the Stadium.

i'm certainly not going to walk either one to find out, but i would say Tyson Park is somewhat closer. however, i'd curious to know if it's fast to walk to AG campus from Tyson and hop the bus.

Ah, so you were mouthing off about something you don't know about. Google Maps clearly shows Tyson Park is nearly twice as far away from the stadium as Market Square. You oughta try walking through the hoopla that is a gameday at UT; it's half of the fun.

estimation. estimation. estimation. i estimated. i was estimating. not really sure how that was "mouthing" off.

i do walk and see all the hoopla. from the Stip. hence the whole reason i've been saying i think the Strip is the best bet. i just happened to like the Tyson Park idea and estimated (there's the word again) that it was closer. it isn't. big deal.

jeez, it's a wonder i even come over. people will pick a fight over anything.

Im coming in from north Carolina for the game. My wife is pregnant (5 months). Where is the best place to park so she wont be too uncomfortable?

Somewhere behind the law school in Ft. Sanders, but you'll have to get there early. And pay.

If you can't find some place close, I'd let her off at the student center (at the corner of Cumberland and Neyland, one block from the stadium), tell her to go inside to one of the two restaurants and sit down with a Coke or something, while you find a place to park and then walk over there and meet her.

Here's the best tip of your life.....you owe me a beer.

For years now, I've parked in the Old City (free beside Barley's or pay a couple of bucks across the street). There is a trolley right in front of Barley's Taproom that will take you right in front of Neyland, a short walk to the tailgates there or the Strip. It's a whopping $4 round trip and they pick you up right after the game where the buses do but you won't have to wait 1/10th as long. Or you can sit, drink watch the other games in the Old City....have them drive you from a bar to the game....and back to a bar. Best kept secret in college football IMO.

I don't mind the walk from Tyson. In fact it is very enjoyable. You get to see the whole strip, and everything. Plus after the game there is no line to get out, you just hit the interstate and your are outta there.

I'm with you on this. I "discovered" Market Square a couple of weeks ago. We rode the trolley to and from the stadium and it was the best $4 I've ever spent. I couldn't believe how easy it was to get to and from the stadium and then get out of town after the game.

That trolley is the best thing going.
