Yes it is another expectation thread for the 2016-2017 season. Like everyone else I am growing tired of predictions and expectations, I am ready for results.

I just want to know where this season ranks for you personally pertaining to excitement and expectations? It has almost been too long to remember anticipating a start to a season this much. When is the last time you felt this way? (justified or not)

For me, you have to go back to the Peyton Manning days. Even 98 was not as fiercely anticipated as this season. Perhaps it is because it has been so long. There was even a time when I didn't know If I would ever anticipate a season again, but thanks to Butch and his staff, they have me on pins and needles again, and appreciating it more than ever! GBO

I think you nailed it LA. The ones who have been following UT football long enough to remember the good before the bad have a new appreciation for what we once took for granted.

The 2001 season comes to mind. That team was absolutely loaded with talent. I also recall being hyped about 2005 (#5 preseason I believe; thanks Clawffense).

#3 just to wallow in that a little more. I remember Phil coming off the field after the LSU miracle saying "who knows, we may see these guys again". Even with Ainge's goal post inspired concussion, he didn't even see it. Unreal.

This year is right up there with 96 & 05. Seams like we have a very good team that's ranked in the top 10 to start the year. I'm amped up. Two weeks and counting.

The 2004 season ended with Rick Clausen playing well at qb. I assumed he'd start at qb in 05. Still surprised he didn't. I would have liked to see Ainge take a redshirt that year. The defense was championship ready. The offense sadly was not.

I've been hyped for Tennessee football every season, even the Dooley era. But this may be the most hyped I've been since the 05 season.

Honorable mentions from recent years:

06 (bounce back)
09 (new era)

Combine the 05 Defense with the 12 Offense and thats a national championship caliber team. Both came from 5 win teams.

I was really hype for 2012, and somewhat rightfully so with the talent we had on offense. But there was just no coaching, and a very subpar defense.

Every single year, I go in excited about how much better we will be than the previous year.

Of course, I've been doing that for long enough that about half the time, my excitement is misplaced. We can't always do better than the year before. Some years, we have to drop. That's a fact of life.

But not this year. This is one of those years where the excitement is through the roof, because in so many TANGIBLE ways, we have a great deal going for us. TANGIBLE. Things you can point at, reach out and touch, things you can say, here, this, we have this in our favor. And this. And this, too. All going for us.

Just five short years ago, when our players couldn't keep up with even marginal SEC opponents on the field, when the other guys would run past our lads like high school players running past middle schoolers, my excitement was simply about getting back to winning seasons. Better. Not world class, just better.

Well, we've done that a few years in a row. And all that hard work by our coaches and players over those years, it pays off. Now, world class. Now, we're swinging for the fences.

From this point on, every year is a potential championship year for the Vols.

That's a lot to be excited about.

Has the Vols recent drought caused rickets and scurvy among Vol fans?:mf_surrender:

I thought we could win 10 in 2012. Team should have won 9 with even an average 4-3 DC (even though we were SLOW on defense).

It has been a long time since I was this excited. I think it was expected in the 90's and early 2000's that we would be in contention for the SEC. This has been a rough stretch.
