All of the talk about Bernard King being the best player in UT b-ball history got me thinking about where he ranks else where. It is obvious that he is the best that has played at UT. Where does everyone think that he ranks historically in the SEC? NBA?

NBA-wise, Bernard King was probably a taller version of Allen Iverson: a stat machine that never won jack.

pretty harsh assessment. a healthy BK was as good of an offensive forward as the NBA has had. AI is a shoot first point guard. BK was a back to the basket small forward.

What's harsh about it? It's true.

I'm not denigrating either one of them, just stating the obvious fact that they both have tended to play on some bad teams.

at the NBA level, there's not a lot you can do if you're surrounded by duds. Oscar Robertson was in that boat until the Bucks picked up Alcindor.

I think he's more like a George Gervin or Elgin Baylor than AI. Guess I just think AI can never win big and King could have in the right circumstances. He's not the type of player to sap the energy out of the remainder of the team and AI definitely is.

The Answer singlehandedly carried the Sixers to the Finals. Bernard, if my memory is correct, never made it as far as the Conference Finals. That said, King is one of the 5 best SEC players and one of the 50 best in NBA history. If you want a fun exercise, eliminate Carmelo Anthony from the equation, then figure who the best teammates The Answer and Bernard ever played with are. A whole bunch of Aaron McKies and Rory Sparrows on those lists.

The Answer has at least played in an NBA Finals. If you want to talk about a guy who was purely about stats, try Pete Maravich. The single most overhyped athlete of the last half century.

1. Pistol Pete
2. Shaquille O'Neal
3. Charles Barkley
4. Bernard King
5. Dominique Wilkins
6. Allan Houston
Maravich never saw the day he was half as good as the players you list 2-5. I bet all those guys wish they had played for their father, been given unlimited shots, and had no pressure to actually occasionally win games. Maravich was nothing but a cheap circus act. His silliness was one of the forerunners to the And 1/streetball dreck that ESPN tries to pass off as sport.

Pistol Pete brought alot of excitement to the game of basketball. He was also one of the most popular players ever, but to say a top 5 player is a far stretch IMO.

Didnt Pete Maravich play a lot like Steve Nash does now? Steve Nash is my favorite player in the NBA which will bring me to a thread idea.:dance2:

Bernard King kind of reminds me of Barry Sanders formerly of the Lions, great player, no help at all from his fellow teammates.

To answer your question, no. Maravich's game looked more like the histrionics of Hot Sauce coupled with the no conscience gunning and disdain for defense of World B. Free.

My issue with that list is with who it excludes--namely, that there is not a single Kentucky player that makes your top 6. With a list that includes Mashburn, Walker, Bowie, Givens, Issel, Riley, Dampier, Nash, Ramsey, Spivy, Hagan, and Groza, and all of the championships and all-america's that came through Lexington, even I must admit that Kentucky must have had at least one of the top players in SEC history at some point.

Basil Hayden also deserves some mention because, in addition to being all-america, he has a very fine whisky named in his honor.

EDIT: Spivey, in particular, was national player of the year.
