a Tennessee running back had 20 plus carries in a game, there might be 1 or 2 by foster the last 2 years. but what happened to our back gettin 20-25 carries a game. i was watching usc last night and the back from oregon state had 14 carries in the first quarter!!! thats how u establish an identity. know that you can run the ball and play action off of that. yes you have to throw the ball and i love 1000 yard receivers but we need to POUND the football, not just run enough to keep defenses honest. its not like were lighting it up throwing 30 plus times a game. Ainge is gone, cromptons not good enough yet, run the ball down auburns throat and maybe we have a chance.

I totally agree. Oregon State's running back had like 37 carries last night. We can easily do that between Foster, Hardesty and Creer, but for some reason we don't do it.

Jacquizz Rodgers had 37 rushes for 186 yards, 5.0 ypc, long of only 15 (though he had multiple 7-9 yard rushes where he just kept churning his legs), and two TDs.

That is definitely how you smack a #1 team in the mouth. I heard the coach told his players that this was their championship game and not to consider themselves underdogs. They did just that and kicked USC in the teeth.

Beautiful thing to watch.

Edit: His brother James had two TD catches as well. Rodgers brothers whooped 'em!

We don't do it because there is no guarantee we can actually hand the ball off without dropping on the turf.

...well, I guess to be fair, this only happens inside the 5 yd line.

In 1986 Johnny Majors gave William Howard 16 consecutive carries (over two possessions), an NCAA record, in the 4th quarter against Ole Miss in a 22-10 win.

When we have a Jacquizz Rodgers.

Foster had 5 games in '07 when he carried the ball over 20 times, and 5 consecutive in '05 to end the season, including a high of 40 against Vandy. I'm not sure individual stats tell the story, though, as he has missed carries due to injury and UT has split time at tailback between Hardesty, Coker, Foster, and Riggs during his career.

In '08 Tennessee has run 106 times through 3 games, or 35 runs per game; in '07 it was 459 for 14 games, or almost 33 rpg; in '06, 382 in 13 for 29 rpg; and in '05, 399 in 11 for 36. Those numbers have all rushes (including sacks, I believe,) so they aren't just limited to backs, but it gives a pretty good indication of our rushing attempts.

NOTE: Riggs also carried the ball more than 20 times in '05 in 3 games, and Coker ran 26 times against Memphis in 2006

I was thinking about this earlier today: In '04 we were breaking in two freshmen qb's and still had a great team because we had two 1000 yd rushers. We gave a great Auburn team just about all they could take in the SECGC. I mean, by 05 Randy Sanders day was done but at least in '04 he had the good sense to play to our strengths. I'm starting to get the feeling Clawson is more intent on showcasing his offense and not so much on doing the things on offense that will give us a W (like running it off-tackle 50 times a game)

There was a team up this way a couple years ago that had four 1,000 yard rushers in a 10-game season.

That doesn't really relate, I'm just sayin'...
