i was a student when dickey took a powder and left for florida. i had never heard of battle who was a position coach not much older than his players (i think he was 27 or 28), but times were different then.

what i've never been able to understand is why in hell would the administration hire dickey as a.d. a few years after he had been canned at florida. he had no connection with tennessee other than being its head coach and pulling a petrino on it, he's not particularly bright, and he's the type who keeps an enemies list. i know he needed a paycheck, but com'on.

The AD position was a lot different back then. It was a sinecure for ex-coaches just about everywhere. I still don't know why they gave the job to Dickey, mind you, but the job itself wasn't as big a deal as it would be now. Dickey wasn't managing a $70m (or whatever it is now) budget.

From what I can gather, the answer to my question is Doug Dickey in 1964. So it's been 44 years since we've hired a coach with no ties to the program.

The Battle hire came as somewhat of a surprise because of his age, at that time, even though he was an assistant coach on the Dickey staff. If I am not mistaken, he was 28 when he became a head coach. As far as Dickey's hire, Freak, I believe there were some "connections" between Bob Woodruff (longtime UT AD) and Frank Broyles that got Dickey to Knoxville. If you want to consider those connections, then I am not sure when we truly hired someone that was totally an "outsider." Interesting food for thought, though.

hiring a coach from inside a program is only smart when the program is successful, such as a coach retiring, we need to burn down and rebuild. we aren't successful at anything.

Dickey didn't have ties to the program . . . but the AD at the time, Bob Woodruff, had previously worked with Dickey, so there was a little bit of an "inside" quality to the hire.

I'm impressed within the context of Duke football, which is pretty much meaningless. Let me know when Duke beats a good team.

Navy, Georgia Tech & Vanderbilt are all 5-3 & are good teams and Duke beat them. They're not great, but good. Virginia beat then #18 North Carolina & then #18Georgia Tech but got waxed by Duke 31-3. Vandy beat then #24 South Carolina & then #13 Auburn and Duke beat them at Vandy.
