When to start worrying?

This actually makes a lot of sense, but I would suspect if Steele was remaining on staff as DC, that announcement would be made to actually help the roster and recruiting efforts. Which is why in the absence of that announcement, I don’t think he’s the DC going forward. I will be happy to eat my hat on that, however.
Well, they don't really need to announce it to the world. You can bet money that in the recruits' living rooms and in zoom calls, they're taking advantage of the open-ended possibilities.

Can't you just see Kevin Steele saying to a young defensive recruit who really wants to play for him, "Yeah, I want you to play here too, and Josh and I have talked about me staying on. We can't take the time to finish our negotiations until we get the more pressing business taken care of, but I have a good feeling about this. Either way, Tennessee's a great place to go to school and play football. Exciting years ahead."

Can't you just hear Josh, Kevin, Tee, and Joe Osovet all playing on some variation of that theme as they talk to the recruits and their parents?

Great points! I like it and hope you’re right.

I hope so, too. It would be a great relief to know that Josh can focus on getting his high-tempo offense up and running assured that a really good defensive coordinator has him covered on the other side of the ball. As long as they're smooth working together. We don't need friction that might become a problem later.

And I'm a bit optimistic about that because, consider this. What if you were trying to get a job at a new firm, a competitor of the place you're at now. And you go to interview, but the head boss man or lady says, "before we finish this interview, I'd like you to work with me on this time-sensitive project for a week. It's critical we get it right. I promise we'll circle back to your candidacy after we get it done, and in the meantime I can pay you for the short term."

Man, you'd be in 7th heaven. Huge advantages come with that. Chance for you to get to know the boss. Chance for him to see you busting your butt for the program. Chance for you to get comfortable with each other, get past the interview jitters. Chance to show what you can do in one aspect of the job. By the end of that week, you're going to have a HUGE leg up on all the other candidates for the job...or will know that it's not for you, if that's how it turns out. Either way, you're better off and your boss and the company are better off.

That's the opportunity I think Kevin, Tee, and Joe are making hay with, right now.

I was a little surprised by the Heupel hire, but am holding out that he may bring a fun style of football to watch and acknowledging he has more actual head coaching success than any coach we’ve hired since Majors.

That said, when should the lack of any announced staff begin to worry us? It’s clear that we were rejected by the top choices for HC. Is something similar at play or is this more of AD White’s tendency towards keeping these types of things close to the vest?
You shouldn’t start worrying till the end of Heupel’s second season if he’s 4-8.

I didn’t think that matters too much for assistants. What matters the most is the security of the head coaches job. And obviously being a first year coach here he has that and then some. We definitely need some assitiants with sec recruiting expire ce. And I’m sure we’ll get that. I would like to see Steele stay on and maybe Martin as well...Martin so long as he’d completely buy in. Which is a big question mark at this time

OP said success not experience..

Jones 84-54, .609%
Heupel 28-8, .778%

I'm hoping for the exciting offense as well.. Hoping for a good DC hire.
You cannot compare Heupel’s win pct to Jones because Heupel inherited Frosts 13-0 team. Jones inherited a sub 500 Tennessee team.

We ought to know something in year 1. Arkansas saw what they had in Sam Pittman in year 1. Those of us being honest with ourselves, and I wasn't one of them, knew what we had with Pruitt in year 1. A good coach should be obvious. We shouldn't be making excuses for why he has losses to Bowling Green, South Alabama or Pitt. I don't care that the roster has massive defections and we are a 12+ year shambles. We should still win those games every time.

When to start worrying? Now - assuming you care anymore. The new guy is BJ part 2 - no need to even remember his name - one less to forget. First fault right off the bat is that he obviously knows nothing about defense and doesn't consider it important - huge blunder.

I’m getting the feeling Steele doesnt want to stay but UR doesn’t want to him and pay the 900k for less than a month on the job.

I was only backing up OP statement.. We can revisit this in 3 years to see who was the better coach at UT.. So save this thread.

Most coaches “came” with concerns. I got very concerned with Butch when his team beat Florida and Georgia but lost to SC and Vandy........it was clear (to me) “his” teams would consistently “underachieve.”

Pruitt lost me at year 1. Again with underachieving. I wasn’t expecting miracles.....but “if” your team can beat Auburn......in NO way should you lose to Vandy by 25.

I tried to get back on board with the “win streak”......I just couldn’t......too many blow out losses and not many good wins.

I’m good right now with Heupel. If I see this team look uninspired/unmotivated I’ll have concerns. If they do not compete I’ll have concerns. I don’t get overly concerned simply by a loss or multiple losses......it’s more about who you lost to or how you lost.

If this team can “compete” play motivated, and progress......I’ll be good......until it no longer is good.
