When things began to unravel for UT Football IMO.

On the heels of a National Title Fulmer failed to recruit a top ten class. The 99 class was ranked somewhere around 16th. Laziness set in. Phil had a chance at a dynasty and screwed it up.

I agree that the recruiting went downhill, and a big factor in that, in retrospect and in agreement with a poster before me, was losing Rodney Garner.

We did manage to accumulate some monster talent prior to the 2001 season. I don't have it in front of me, but I believe that all 11 defensive starters went on to the NFL, and maybe 7-8 of our offensive starters.

The 2002 class was #1 in some services, but a lot of duds in that one.

Hey man---you are just opening yourself up for numerous attacks on your sanity if you dare post something of an adult common sense nature. CLK will use anything for an edge in recruiting----including shout outs to the WHOLESOME Lil Wayne---at the expense of alienating the non-conformists. "Street Cred" really came into focus last week. :ermm:

For the record, "adult" and "old-fashioned" do not mean the same thing...

and "common sense" should not appear anywhere in reference to the OP. At all.

Really. So if you dont care for Rap music you are old fashioned? Hmmmm------pencil me in.
No melody, no arrangement, no musicans, and lyrics you wouldn't repeat to your mother? A jackhammer makes noise. Blind followers-----all.

Im ready to reload instead of rebuild! Cant wait to see what happens when we get some depth. There is a huge drop-off in talent between our starters and back-ups right now. Actually our back-ups look more like scrubs than anything, Thanks Fulmer!

Things began to unravel in the second half of the 01 SECCG when a second string qb took apart the Chavis prevent. That put us into a slow decline which I hope ended with the firing of the former staff.

Glad some1 has actually been watching the games. That was a title team my friends.

Twitter / Lane Kiffin: looking forward to another ...

Probably should have left this alone as well.
By the way, JJ sould stay on the team but he needs some kind of therapy which may have been needed by all three prior to this, probably would have helped a lot. That's why it is very important things are addressed adequately and promptly.
Remember Colquit, what was that all about. Did he get any help or drug counseling or treatment at first sign. I only hope UT is doing the right thing in helping these guys, any player, to be better people then football players in that order.

Nah, I'm pretty sure it was when Fulmer and Chavis managed to blow a 10 point halftime lead against a team playing it's back-up QB and RB.

Why are they showing how matches are made on Unwrapped on the Food Network? What does that have to do with anything? This must be the beginning of the end of Mark Sommers and Unwrapped...

Although I think everyone deserves a second chance, let's be realistic. The odds are these guys weren't just drinking coke and eating candybars when the (alleged) robbery attempt was made at that time in the morning. 50/50 chance DWI could have been issued had they been caught while in progress.

I am pretty sure KPD is not going to let someone they think has a "50/50" chance of being drunk slide. It is not like they have ever turned their back the other way for a football player (and I am not suggesting they do). Whether CLK has street cred or not has nothing to do with this. We all thought this team was bad at the beginning of the year and with great coaching, it turned up our expectations.

Witch Doctor say all the uproar is from sissy sports writers that told everyone to "Bet the farm" Kiffin would fail. Witch Doctor say the blow-outs they predicted never happened and their cred has suffered. This is the shot to slam Kiffin they been crying for. Witch Doctor say writers/radio sports in Florida was telling people to mortgage their houses that Gators were going to win by 40....remember? This is just their little attempt at redemption.....Bones say......Fail.

Witch Doctor believe in moral victory and conspiracy theory. Witch Doctor fail.

No...if you think that a tweet about a rapper makes our program unravel, you are old fashioned if not flat out clueless.

I think people have really unrealistic expectations about what a program can do in this day using just "family values" and "Tennessee Tradition." I'm sure those go a long way, but it most certainly does not hurt to have popular musicians who target our player audience speaking our coaches name.

the commercial that has Lee Corso entering the elevator and the UT woman is chasing a pig off the elevator.

That's when it started

I think it started to unravel in 1999. Fulmer reached his goal the year before and became complacent at that point. Discipline was atrocious after 1998 because we didn't have a player leader like Al Wilson or Peyton... We only had 1 team after 1998 that was on the same level as those mid to late 90s teams, and that was 2001. So 2001 was actually an outlier that achieved its success based on the recruiting winfalls we enjoyed based on the 1997 and 1998 championships. The norm for post 1998 was underachievement, if not gross underachievement.

Good post, GJ. When I read your post, I was waiting on someone to catch your use of "outlier" (a word that you, of all people, are qualified to use).

I am really hopeful that we are seeing the beginnings of a new era in UT football, a decade removed from National prominence. Most of us accepted that this would be a tough year, but it's had some nice upswings (good wins over Georgia and SC, competitive games against Alabama and Florida, much improved QB and RB play, excellent D -- sparing the Ole Miss catastrophe). There is much to build on, and we are recruiting well.

It's tough when crazy fans get excited and start predicting an SEC title or winning out (after the mid-season wins), just to be brought back to earth. But, there is a buzz in K-town and the pieces are starting to fall into place. It's a much different mentality now than it has been, especially from 2001-2008.
