When is the last time UT payed top dollar for a football coach?

Yes . . . For several years there, CPF was top 5 or so.

Not disagreeing, but we must have started to lose ground toward the end of Fulmer's tenure. Here's Fulmer's salary history per 2008 KNS article:

1993: $300,000
1994: $400,000
1995: $430,000
1996: $470,000
1997: $610,000
1998: $750,000
1999: $950,000
2000: $1,050,000
2001: $1,300,000
2002: $1,600,000
2003: $1,660,000
2004: $1,790,000
2005: $2,050,000
2006: $2,050,000
2007: $2,050,000
2008: $2,400,000

Looks like Dickey was more tight-fisted than Hamilton.

According to same article, here's what other SEC coaches were being paid in 2008:

Nick Saban, Alabama: $4,000,000
Les Miles, LSU: $3,750,000
Urban Meyer, Florida: $3,250,000
Bobby Petrino, Arkansas: $2,850,000
Tommy Tuberville, Auburn: $2,800,000
Mark Richt, Georgia: $2,800,000
Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee: $2,400,000
Steve Spurrier, South Carolina: $1,750,000
Houston Nutt, Ole Mis: $1,700,000
Sylvester Croom, Mississippi State: $1,700,000
Rich Brooks, Kentucky: $1,600,000

Outside the SEC, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Charlie Weis, Kirk Ferentz, Mack Brown and maybe someone I'm missing made more than Fulmer. In 2008, we paid well, but Fulmer was only 7th in the SEC and Tennessee was not top ten in the nation in HC pay.

The landscape in the SEC has changed and in order to run with the big boys UT is going to have to pony up some bucks if we expect to compete.

Going back to Majors, UT has not been willing to drop the kind of money many of you are suggesting in terms of getting rid of Dooley and hiring another new coach.

The last time was 2009 when we paid a fortune for Kiffin and his staff. What did we get in turn, a one year stint with nothing to show for it except the NCAA investigating us. Prior to that, we did not really need to for Majors or Fulmer They both seemed to work out pretty well. So i guess when you look at it, we got screwed when we paid alot and we didn't when we didn't. Funny how that works. Someyimes you don't have to pay alot if you get the right person.

That's why I said staff you dolt.

I asked a simple question, dumbass. I'm honestly not sure how you construed a simple question into a need for name-calling like a child.

Also, Kiffin is part of his staff. Therefore, saying Kiffin's staff is the highest paid would include himself.

It was whatever they were paying for Fulmer bottom-line. We were very traditional, in house until the failed Kiffin and Dooley experiments now sadly our football program is simply put "God Awful" and hard to watch.

It's not like we have hired many head football coaches since salaries escalated. When Dickey left and we hired Battle salaries really wasn't an issue. After Battle we hired Majors who was the hottest coach in America at that time. Fulmer took over for Majors and coached up until we hired Kiffin. The only "low rent" hire we have had has been Dooley but there were special circumstances around that hire. This thread is just trying to create a negative story when there isn't one.

When is the last time the big money told the AD to hire a big time coach or piss off?

The financial situation is pretty grim right now but it gets a lot worse if we make another "cheap" hire. Hart is better off keeping Dooley in that situation.

Bama fiddled around for 10 years and finally paid big money and got Saban. Now its time for Tennessee to hire a big name that's a proven winner (not on the job training). Throw the cash on the table, sign on the dotted line, get to Knoxville, and let's start winning some football games again!
