I don’t think Heupel will or should be fired anytime soon. He does need to address the defensive deficiencies and the penalties. This would likely require some assistant coach/coordinator changes. The team has shown no improvement in terms of discipline. If he isn’t willing to chew a player out for making a bone headed mistake or not giving full effort on a play he needs a well respected assistant coach who will.

He's not going to finish 6-6 this year.
He's not going to be 0-6 against Georgia after next year, because I don't think that they play.
If you consider 8-4 or 9-3 to be mediocre, (not a completely unfair assessment, but not the one DW will use), then it is not going to happen next year either.

So, you should have included a none of the above option.

I think its premature to have a conversation on firing Heupel.

Does he need to make some changes? Yes, starting with discipline and fundamentals.

100% agree with this position. For all the fire the coaches posts, DW is not firing Heuple after this season but I do believe Heuple's future here may be decided in the next couple of yrs based on what he does end of this season. It is clear to me at least, that changes have to be made, whether it is asst coach changes, schemes, whatever but he needs to dig deep in the offseason make improvements.
Pay no attention to anybody that puts fire and Heupel in the same sentence. Talk about moronic.

Change is another story. Notably finding somebody that can teach tackling. That was the worst exhibition I’ve seen in all my years of watching football and that’s around 60 of them. I attribute a lot of the Bama big plays to that mess.

A lot of folks will add pass coverage to that too. Definitely struggling in that area especially without McCoy and Gibson. Even Hood had a rough day Saturday. I believe they are playing more soft zone and big drops to try to help the replacements and it’s leading to big chunk plays. Hard to do that when you can’t make tackles in open space. Simpson had a bunch of completions over 15 yards. Definitely agree that some changes need to be made.

He's here as long as we're a top 20 team.....plus two years

No, if we go another 2-3 years and aren’t competitive with the top sec teams and fail to make the playoffs most years he won’t survive. I don’t expect that to happen but not making the playoffs for that amount of time will not be excepted. But Heupel is recruiting well and the season is not done. We have a ton to play for and if we improve and eliminate silly mistakes and drops and start tackling better we can win out and make the playoffs. Giving up at mid season like some on here is weak sauce fandom, the players need to tune the noise out and focus on turning this season around. Being a young team is not an excuse half way into the season, especially when most of the mistakes are fundamental pop Warner type of mistakes. The coaches need to coach harder and the players have to rally around each other and play harder. It’s time to get tough, nobody is feeling pity for the Vols. It’s time to start fighting back and putting teams away! And that goes for staff and the players, go get it done! GBO

The discipline and fundamentals part starts and stops with the HC!!!!

Those things will not change with him. Prepare yourself for mediocre seasons for three years unless staff overhaul. But remember he’s never fired an assistant!

Writing is on the wall with CJH.

How much longer does Heupel get? He’s quite possibly the worst in-game manager since Dooley and he has no marbles in some sort of loyalty complex to not fire every single defensive coach and coordinator.

Everyone just needs to come to the realization that we are never gonna be up there with bama or Georgia. The sooner everyone accepts it and moves on the better you will be. We I’ll make the playoffs here and there but that’s where it stops.

Heupel will get fired within 20 months.

Yea very true too many fans want us to go back to the 90’s glory years and that’s never gonna happen again hell we last won a SEC title in the 90’s haven’t went to the SEC title game since 2007.

This, fellow true Vols fans, is what a troll infestation looks like.

Go Vols!

next year we play some tough teams but the majority of those are at Neyland. we are very lucky that way.

At home we play Bama, LSU and Texas (along with crappy Auburn and UK) Tennessee is a VERY good team at home and I expect a lot of high profile wins on national TV in 2026.

our toughest road game BY FAR is TAMU. other than that we play Arkansas with a 1st year HC, South Carolina and Vanderbilt without Diego Pavia. there is the Georgia tech game but we should be able to handle them anywhere.

and best of all NO GEORGIA!

IMO if we go 7-5 or 6-6 with that schedule then termination is firmly on the table because 2027 is going to be God awful brutality. we have to play AT Bama, AT Georgia, and AT Oklahoma

Goodness. It kills me how in the beginning of the year we all make predictions and most people say "Probably 10-2, losing to Bama and Georgia." But then when we actually lose to Bama and Georgia, you call for the best coach we have had since Fulmer's head.
I don't think many of any people are calling for Heupel's firing right now. there are many calling for coordinator changes at the end of the year however.

if Tennessee goes 10-2 only losing to Bama and Georgia and has an outside shot at the playoff then everything is OK but you do have to give Huepel a VERY hard sideways look right now like WTF is wrong with you coach?

when you score 21 points on Georgia in the first quarter alone and find a way to lose at home no less and then totally crap the bed against probably the most beatable Bama team in a generation we could VERY easily have been undefeated right now. I think any reasonable person would say that Bama did not beat us, we beat ourselves. Is that acceptable or a good sign in week 7 of the season?
