I was listening to Big Orange Sunday with Coach Doug Matthews and he talked about the era when we were constantly a winning program and developing players from left to right. Then he started to get into origins in how the program started to head south.

For those of you who listened to the show on Sunday, feel free to weigh in. Other than that, poll in to what led to the state of the program to what it is today.

Of course this all led to the demise of Fulmer.

Does it really matter?
Alot of the demise was when the other SEC schools began to win again and shut down the borders on recruits. The other half was when Cutcliffe left to coach Ole MIss.

How did Matthews not mention these two factors.

He is not going to belittle Fulmer, Fulmer got the recruits in on offense and Cutcliffe coached them up. The record for the time Cutcliffe was here vs when he was not is shocking. Fulmer with Cutcliffe 82-19 Fulmer without Cutcliffe 66-33

I think it started when Cut left for ole miss. There was still alot of talent on the team and the recruiting was still strong due to on field success ( 98 national champions) But everything started to decline at that point, no one there to develop talent and instill the disipline needed to win in the sec

I dont know if randy sanders was all that bad.i think the head coach held him back alot.he was alot better than clawson .and it seems he got liitle more out of the qbs.

I think CPF got comfortable after the 98' season, as did some assistants. CPF was loyal and in most cases did not make changes pro actively. Recruiting has been good, but not at the level of the mid to late 90's. Look at the NFL rosters, our best "era" of players are 5 to 8 year vets. now.

When Cutcliffe left and we lacked discipline.

You bring up a great point. The first few years Fulmer took over (93-99) he had to be on his toes constantly. He couldn't afford a bad year b/c of the Majors situation. He had to work 24/7. Once he won the NC, he figured he'd be coach as long as he wanted.

I think we hired a guy that is looking to make a mark, not add to his legacy. Therefore it looks similar to CPF when he was hired. I think the supporting staff could be better than what CPF had @ anytime. It starts with recruiting, discipline, and development. Pretty sure he has the first one covered.

Complaceny is very dangerous, especially when you are on Cloud 9.

The more I see Cutcliffe in this discussion, the more it supports my theory that it was him that covered or saved Phil's you know what all this time.

Good start guys!!!

The Clawson hire had to work for CPF, and it did not. Fulmer got the players. Chavis and Cut could coach them.

All of the candidates for the OC job would have not worked anyway.

Look up Rob Spence: GONE from Clemson

Look up Kippy Brown: Sucks to be OC for a winless team

Fulmer needed a Cut type of guy that could handle the job by himself. He seemed to be able to manage the program as long as he had people who could handle their side of the ball. I do not think we realized how good Cut was at Qb development. After 05' Fulmer could not stand a year like this one. It is safe to say our D was good enough for 9 or 10 wins. Our O was good enough for 3.

Cutcliffe was the winning force in Fulmer's success. It had nothing to do with the 98 NC. Sanders only became OC for the NC game, from 99 to 2005 the decline began, Cutty came back in 06 and had is in the 07 SECCG see the pattern.

It seems like they were scared to take a chance when cut was'nt there. They always used a scripted system and stuck to it.when it was'nt working they did'nt know how to adjust.other teams knew that took advantage of it.

Question is can Kiffin build on the good things that Phil brought and fix the things he could not. Phil wanted the best for UT, but could not or would not change what needed to be changed. With the staff Kiffin claims to have things will be different thats for sure. Just hope it does not take long, he may not have a lot of time.

I think Kiffin will do the job...just hope he can keep all or at least the vast majority of recruits we have, plus pull off a few surprises...may not happen this year, but I think we have good days ahead of us! Remember, all we have to do is work like heck and look at the tape, and everything else we'll take care of itself! :dance2:
