What's Your Updated Coaching "Hotboard"?

In no particular order, I would be happy with any of these. There are a lot of good coaches out there and I could add a few more. Currie promised the fans a good solid coach with integrity.
Les Miles
Kevin Sumlin
Gus Malzahn
Chris Petersen
Bobby Petrino
David Cutcliffe
Tee Martin
Bob Stoops
Mike Leach

Be prepared to overpay for someone you don’t want because whoever it is will know they’ll be out of a job in 4 years

I didn’t think you were in the “Dooley position” before, but I think you are now

Yep.

Bring back Kiffin.
Or, yeah, overpay for a dud who will be canned in 3-5 years.

Why, though?

There was a report that Currie had a conversation to gauge Petersen's interest before he went to the Bahamas.

I don't see how he would have talked to Petersen himself with him having a game left, but you could accept the report and believe the reps talked.

That left room for a fantasy that we have a competent AD who was able to chill in the Bahamas for a couple of days because he had his guy, and a hire like Petersen would also make sense out of Currie's decision to use the Gruden rumors for cover for his real search.

Why, though?

From the Currie presser "looking for a coach of the highest integrity" "someone who can get Tennessee to championships"

His presser made it look like someone with no type of baggage.......which would have eliminated many of the names floated.

His presser made it look like they would hire the best possible x's and o's coach who could get Tennessee back.........while many coaches could be good.............that also would have eliminated some names floated.

Frost looked like he was going to Neb or FL
Mullen looked like he was staying put at the time
Patterson signed an extension
Gruden was not going to happen
Stoops.........wanted no part of coaching
the Sabans and Myers of the world were not comeing

Petrino
Kiffin
prob Leach
and others were off because of Currie's statements (and Leach shut down all rumors anyway)

Fuente just got things rolling
Campbell has a 9 mil buyout (which has to be paid in 45 days)
Norvell.........maybe but not what we were sold by Currie
Strong........just got fired by Texas
Taggert.........he has a losing record (not saying he is a bad coach.....but again we were all told and sold something more)

Now for me that left Petersen......sure this was a dream.....but as the weeks and days went by......this seemed more possible.......especially if you really looked into things.

Reports came that Tennessee was interested in Petersen......well sure they should be. Then reports came that Petersen (or his people) may have contacted Tennessee before they even did him.......again most likely nothing to this.....but just more piling on.

Some people start saying Petersen's buyout is so high that it can't happen. Then I start looking into it and discover his buyout changed with his new contract this summer. Per his old contract his buyout would have been 2.5 mil......then next year it would have been lowered to 1.5 mil. This year he got a raise and extension, and it lowered the buyout to 1.5 mil. Sure nothing big.........but why get your buyout lowerd just for one year?

Some people said he wouldn't leave because his son was sick. However after looking into it.......one son is now grown and the other is a senior in high school and not in bad health.

Twice this year Petersen complained about the lack of media exposure, and the late start times to games in the PAC. Im sure people get upset and say crap.......but why do it twice? Petersen is a smart man, he knows saying something isnt going to change anything.

Petersen is only 4 years into a rebuilding job at Washington. Last year they were doing great.....but still had to win out near the end, and until the last couple of weeks they even had to wonder if they could get in the playoff. He knows things are very different in the SEC. If Tennessee had one loss, but won the champ they would always be in the playoff.......if Tennessee had 2 losses and won the champ they could still get in........This may or may not happen at Washington with 1 and would not happen with 2.

Everyone knows Tennessee is down, and has been; However Washing has been down and really never been consistently good. Washington has only finished the season ranked 20 times in their over 100 year existence. Tennessee has finished ranked 20 times over the past 30 years. Washing has had 20 seasons of 9 wins or better.......ever. Tennessee has had 40 seasons of 9 wins or more.........Not saying Washington is bad, and not saying Tennessee is great, but it does have a better history, a better tradition, they pull in better recruits, and have WAY more money to offer the coach plus what he wants or needs of the program.

Sure Tennessee needs rebuilding but he wasn't against it when he went to Washington........they had 11 of 12 seasons in a row with 7 wins or less.

this is just some of the reasons.

All three have the ability to do well in the SEC if they can get the recruits.

We stood at the cavern’s entrance, uncertain of what dwelt therein. Bunched close together, human sardines taking small, timid steps. That despite it all, yielded solid footfalls. There’s courage and safety in numbers, least I’ve been told.

Dripping water splashed our heads and shoulders. Exuding the stench of sulfur and sharing the smell as it slid off our skin and clothes. Somewhere in distant depths, came a faint “Coaaaaa. . .” The sound faded leaving a sense the cry was unfinished. We continued. Wading through ice cold streams. Slipping and falling on the slippery rocks. Bumping into stalactites and stalagmites, suffering cuts and bruises as a result. “Coaaaaaaa. . .”

Flashlights flickered, threatening to fail. All too soon they kept their promise and did just that. Light sticks were shaken, some snapped, providing ghostly pale green light. Sputtering flares joined the glow, illuminating the deeper regions of the cave. Suddenly revealing a mossy figure adorned with loosely hanging spider webs. “Coaaaaach!” it moaned and stepped our way. One of our number separated himself from us and met the figure halfway.

“We’ve come in search for you. Will you come with us to the Orange Realm?”
“Yesssss. I aaaaam, Coaaach. . .” the remaining words were unintelligible.

But there he was, the one we sought and had finally found. None other than: [pick the correct answer]

Norvell – Who makes the most sense right now but would have to be massively convinced to come to the UT after the Schiano “sheet” show.

Les Miles – A highly probable option but risky as like Fulmer, modern game tactics has passed him by.

Jeff Brohm – The trick will be to convince him to leave a truly safe job for a rabid SEC school.

It will be only one these three. And the UT must demand, not ask that the coach include a proven defense coaching staff. No matter how good an offense is, in the SEC you darn well better have a stout defense or you won’t see a SECC berth. AND, yes sir, AND. . . hire Blackburn before Neyland and the Hill experience a 5 year long 1871Chicago level program irrelevance conflagration.

Forget Kiffin, he simply can’t be trusted. If the UT is dumb enough to hire him, it deserves the resulting heart attack that comes with that hire.

Let's have everyone put their top 3/5 REALISTIC new candidates here in the thread. I'll start:

1. Tee Martin
2. Philip Fulmer (as interim)
3a. Lane Kiffin (with buy-out terms favoring UT)
3b. Les Miles
3c. Kevin Sumlin

Better question...Who has said NO to Currie?

Frost
Kiffin
Sumlin
We will have to over pay to get a quality coach after yesterday. In the long run it will be for the best. Frost will take 6M and then give him 6M to get a staff. (Pilot has the money) His wife will tell him he can go to Neb. in 10 years after he has built this program to a champions program. Then he won't leave.

fulmer 1 year interim

this is where i’m at now. Probably left out a couple but these are the first names that come to mind.

Still would love to make gruden an official offer. I don’t believe he ever received and that’s why he said the stuff about knoxville and rocky top. I think he wants the job but never was offered.

are you smoking something? My god man let it go!!!

After this disaster, it will be on to tier 5, with Mike Bobo, Neal Brown, or Frank Martin.

Mike Leach

One of these things is not like the other.

My big board hasn't really changed all that much, never believed Gruden would come.

Patterson (screwed this over in the past)
Petersen (unlikely, I know)
Venables
Brohm
Norvell
Cutcliffe/Martin
