This area was one of our bright spots and it may be more at fault than anything right now for our situation. They got whipped up on by a nobody last Sat. They got pushed back and we didn't even have enough faith in them to try to pick up 3 inches one time!

Any experts got an opinion on why they just don't have it? Without them opening up a running game we will never have any hope.

I'm far from an expert, but they don't appear to have good feet or any leg drive. Some of that is scheme, some of it inability.

I don't think this unit has ever been good at running the ball. They appeared really good at pass protection when Ainge was under center and Cutcliffe was calling the plays.

I have no idea, but if I was as strong as some of these kids are I think I could knock some guys out of the way.... I mean isn't every starter a 4* prospect out of high school??

Weren't they highly recruited? They are huge and supposed to be athletes. If that's true is it scheme more than anything?

No one looks comfortable together in the O. It's not just the OL's it's the WR's the TE's, everyone looks out of sink. Hopefully they can get comfortable with each other this week, otherwise this one could get ugly.

We haven't had a good run blocking line since well, i can't remember when. Maybe 2001. Its fairly safe to say. A whole lot of tennessee's problems are based on interior line play on both sides of the ball.

I'm far from an expert, but Tennessee lacks just plain nasty pissed off mood personnel. Technique is one thing over a course of the game, but you have one down to get one yard and it comes down to the man that wants it the most. Add to that your out weighing your man by an average of 30 lbs., it's almost laughable.

In 2004 Tennessee had some good blocking.

I never understand why Tennessee never has a dominant Oline under Fulmer. He was suppose to have been a good offensive lineman in his day.

The problem with the offensive line is that they are coach by Phil Fulmer. AT Tennessee we have a tradition of players getting worse over the course of thier career. For example Casey Clausen, Jonathan Crompton, Arian Foster, and etc...

I've also been surprised by the number of batted passes at the line. At first I thought it was Crompton's release, but it continued with Stephens.

I would have to say we were dominate at times in the 90's. We blew people back and opened holes. We would change backs and not see much of a drop off.

They play too soft, like they don't have a mean bone in their body. The O-line should be putting the fear of god into any defense who have to play them. Wow, they sure can push some wieghts around yet they can't even move a undersized NIU defensive a couple of inches for a 1st down! They should have been licking their chops at a chance to play a line that size but instead of seeing pancakes galore and NIU defenders driven backwards the defenders are in our backfield almost every play. Hopefully, if they have any pride they will be mad and have something to prove when they play UGA on Saturday if not things are going to get ugly.

I think most of the hype of the o-line came based on the fact that UT only gave up like 4 sacks last year. What people may not realize is that the main reason for that is Ainge threw the ball as fast as he could when someone approached him.

Greg Adkins is not a very good O-Line coach imo

Quality of a player is usually inverse to their quality as a coach. There's a variety of reasons for this, but I'd argue the biggest one is that the best tend to both work hard and have great natural talent. The worse players need to focus on the most basic techniques as much as possible in order to hang on, and they tend to impart a great deal of that fundamental knowledge to their players.

That said, Fulmer has overseen some very good players and lines. Charles McRae, Jeff Smith, Bubba Miller, Kevin Mays, Cosey Coleman, Chad Clifton, Trey Teague, Jason Layman, Scott Wells, Will Ofenheusle, etc.

But if you look at who goes onto the next level since Fulmer first got back, you'll notice a staggering decline since roughly 2003. The talent most certainly is there, but everything I've seen points to a complete inability or unwillingness on the part of Greg Adkins to actually properly instruct the basic fundamentals of blocking. And that is inexcusable. For a position coach (at the most important position) to wing it like this is beyond absurd.

Back to my first point, I was a terrible player. And so the inverse of that would be....well, either I'm a great coach or simply another loudmouth with an inflated ego who thinks he knows what good football looks like.

So did Crompton (I have not seen Stephens,) which may have been at least some of the problem. He looked hurried in every game with the possible exception of UAB. Throwing the ball as hard and as quickly as you can on a 3 step drop is not a good substitute for a line that can block.

Without Vlad, the run blocking sucks. When Vlad's in the game, the run production is better.

the o-line was very overrated to begin the season because of ainge getting rid of the ball so quickly last year
