What's Wrong with Optimism?

What gets me is the same people, for the most part, say it is stupid to have optimism based on how we did against a weaker team then turn right around and base their despair and fear for another team like with Oregon beating up on a team that lost their first 10 last year and made Texas A&M (a team that went 6-7) look like a national title contender in the opener as well as saying we can't base how bad Florida might be despite playing a team that has lost some like 23 of their last 24 or 25 games.

A suit made of thin skin is not appropriate attire for a message board. Go Vols. Pass the Dool-Aid™ !! :)

Only critical thing that concerns me right now is if Wilcox is the deal, how long does he stay.

Dude, really? Why worry about this right now? Season has just started and we are 1-0 with a tough schedule ahead of us. Shouldn't be worrying that our d-coordinator might or might not take another job down the road. Are you also worried that UGA might come knocking at some point for Dooley as well? I agree! Optimism is not a bad thing. But, going overboard is!! I see many fans (mainly young guys) screaming every year about how we will be world beaters. A local friend of mine even bet an Alabama fan last week that he would shave an A in his head if they beat TN this season. My brother tried to talk reason into him before he made the bet but he thinks we will be great this season. Probably not long before he looks like a fool.
There is a middle area that we need to be in right now. 15 years back I was screaming how we would whip ass to anyone carrying a pigskin. Back then we could usually back it up. We now are lucky to win 50 percent of our games. This is not the time to beat our chests and warn others of how we will disgrace them on the field. Just sit back and enjoy every win because they might just be few and far between for a while. Who knows, we may sneak up and knock one good one off too.
BTW, I look forward to talking trash again. Hell, I can't even talk trash to the local NC fans these days. Oh....................how far the mighty have fallen.

Yeah Wilcox will have to prove himself in the SEC over at least a couple to few years before a superior (head coach, NFL, etc) job comes about.

Kiffin left after a year that is not the norm and he is the poster boy for summer's eve.

Can't expect everyone to be sunshine and unicorns. We saw way to much of that after the Western Kentucky game last year, then we went out and lost to UCLA, and it seemed as though this board should have been on suicide watch. I'm just calling things as I see them. I'm not basing what I say off what I read or hear. Last night, It seemed to me that we still have a ways to go as far as the QBs are concerned, and I'm still not sold on the offensive line against a big time defense. I saw positives as well, I think we have talent on the Defense and some very talented RBs.

Nothing wrong with focusing on the positives, but you have to at least notice the negatives. And yes, as much as some of you hate to realize it, there are still some negatives, even after a 50-0 win.

Next week, we'll find out A LOT about this team. Until then, it's just too hard to guage where exactly we are right now. Westerne Kentucky should have taught this fanbase that after what happened last year.

This whole negativity thing is being way overplayed.

It is. I'm not sure when, looking at a depleted roster and our third coach in 3 seasons, not jumping up and down while making joyful nosies because we destroyed a middle of the pack OVC team is viewed as negative.

I think it is perfectly reasonable to look at the state of the program and figure that we aren't going to be all that good this season, or probably next season. I believe that questioning whether a guy with an unremarkable record at Louisiana Tech can lead us from the wilderness contains some merit.

But there seems to be a club developing which seems to enjoy portraying those viewpoints as being held only by bashers of the program. I don't really understand it, but that probably is why I don't have my "truefan" card yet.

No matter how many negative threads we see here daily...we really don't see them. I get it now.
No . . . I just think a lot of people have trouble dealing with anyone that forms an opinion that happens to be different from their own, so they stick a label on it and dismiss it.

Really?

I look around here and most of what I see is negativity.

"Oh, we won last night, but it was against a terrible team."
"We'll win 5 games at best this year."
etc.

I like to think we'll compete every year, no matter what. It's football. It's sport. Entertainment. Why do people watch sports?

To escape.

Why drag the negativity into something that's supposed to be fun? I curse and yell and get frustrated when we lose, when we make bad plays, when we underperform- but I still look forward to the next week and realize that everything will be just fine.

We are Tennessee fans, students, alumni... we follow one of the most storied and successful programs in the history of the game. Not many programs can make that claim.

Look forward to the next week. The passion and energy that swallows Neyland and the state of Tennessee and beyond is unlike anything else. Be glad you get to be a part of it and when we do lose or we do underperform, move on.

Just be happy to have the privilege to enjoy this team, and take every season you get to watch as a gift. The average person will only get 70 to remember.

excellent post !

The best I remember, weren't we supposed to suck in 1998? I believe that a lot of people wrote us off then too!

I didn't relize my post would be taken so seriously. Not really, Dooley isn't going anywhere.

I really don't care if people are negative or not ... what I don't understand is how two teams ( Tennessee and Oregon ) both played their games ... people say Oregon is going to be hard to beat because their so fast, but Tennessee is a wait and see ... they both played teams that wasn't even in their league and both came out on top of their opponent ... why would you say wait on Tennessee and already be building up Oregon.

I think that's about right. Nobody thought we were going to be bad in 1998. It's just that we had a lot of fans that thought Peyton Manning invented the QB position and that nobody would be able to play it again.

That's very true but it is still strange that people on a fan's board do the same as you describe when someone is being...well, just a fan. I don't mean to be argumentative, but that's kind of weird. It's all fun for the most part though. :clapping:

It just is what it is. The people who are motivated to post are the ones with the strongest opinions.

I remember watching a scrimmage before the season and I thought Tennessee was going to struggle. But it's a relative term. Anything less than 10 wins was considered bad in 98.

I am getting very tired of these threads calling out 'nega-vols'. We are (almost) all Vol fans on here, lets stop turning on each other. Everybody has got a right to their opinion, and no one has the right to tell me or anyone else they are not a true fan.

The truth is we are in the first year of a rebuilding process with a brutal schedule. It will more than likely get pretty darn ugly the next few weeks, brace yourself.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, STOP these silly threads where all you do is wave your pom-poms and criticize people who are bracing for a rough season.

For the record I love the Vols as much as anyone, think Dooley is the guy to bring us back, and will watch every game this season. But, my friends, the next couple of years are gonna hurt. No way around that.
