What's Wrong with Optimism?

this. And while the argument that negativity equals reality holds most of the truth, there are times when I just avoid this board because the negativity is too overwhelming.

:cray:You need to toughen up.

It's not allowed on this board. Be negative or GTFO.

There is plenty of optimism on the board. Alternatively, some choose to point out areas that need work or withold judgment until Tennessee plays a higher quality opponent.

Saying Tennessee played well yesterday doesn't make someone a 'DoolAid' drinker. Just as pointing out weaknesses or areas of concern doesn't make someone a hater.

The problem is posters who want to label everyone and place them into one of these extremes.

It's fine to have a little negativity. But hating on the program you're a "fan" of is downright stupid.

It's a game. Why be so ridiculously absorbed with downing everything as many are on here?
Well not everyone lives in sunshine and unicorn land. I think there's a good balance of opinions on this board.

I'm optimistic that whatever the outcome of next week's game is, it will serve to draw out an even more extreme reaction either way.

Really?

I look around here and most of what I see is negativity...

What gets me most is not the negativity, but the people that complain about people being negative. If negative people on a message board get to you then you need to step back.

You live in the real world and there are people that are jerks and like to instigate. It's the same on here. I with you, I enjoy a Tennessee win no matter who they play. If some one is not satisfied with a win then let them be. No need to whine about it.

That seems to be the nature of our fan base these days, the vocal majority anyway.

I don't see that and I'm on the board a lot.

People are giving their opinion. If most think UT will not win the SEC this year I don't see that is being negative, I see it as an honest opinion, not "hating on the program."

Too many people sitting back and being happy with any win despite poor play and a general lack of discipline is how the program ended up where it is today. Not being satisfied with mistakes is how a team improves.

didn't realize I had that kind of power.

I just watched the post game news conference and the Derek Dooley Show. He said there are things the team did well and he spoke about things that need to be improved. Is he both a negavol and dool-aid drinker? Come on.

Just because a post is negative doesn't mean the poster is a nega-vol. Just because the post is about the positive does not mean the poster is a dool-aid drinker.

We're all concerned about this year. It's a given. The things that need improvement will be addressed. The positives will be reinforced.

I feel better about this team than I did at 2:59 yesterday (3 hours behind most of you). I know the team and the coaches are going to work hard this week to prepare for Oregon. I have faith that they are going to do their best. I don't know how the game is going to turn out.

I don't think optimism is bad but when people think we will beat Oregon because of the UTM game, thats ridiculous. we could upset them, but I mean c'mon. This looks like a good 6-6 team with maybe a couple upsets.

Optimism that is not grounded in reality just leads to unrealistic expectations, which is one thing DD and company don't need right now. Best case scenario is that this is going to take a few years to turn around, and people are going to need to keep an even keel throughout that time period because there will likely be some ups and downs.

People are saying there is a need to withold any judgement until after next week, but even that is far too soon. Coming cross country is tough for any team. Even if Tennessee beats Oregon there is a good chance there still won't be many wins coming in the SEC this year, especially if we suffer some injuries at critical positions.

It would be in everyone's best interest to just wait to the end of the year and evaluate the situation then. Did the team improve over the course of the 3 month season? Were they consistently prepared each week? Did they give maximum effort each week and never quit, regardless of how bad things looked on the scoreboard. These are the things I will judge this season based on, not so much the W-L record.

We are young, thin and out-talented at many positions, so super high expecations for this year are unfair to DD and his staff. I still say we're going to be looking at a 4-8 season, maybe 5-7 if we can pull off an upset. If people see that as negative, so be it.

These sort of matter of fact comments based on next to no info are what get me. What that you saw last night makes you think this is a "good" 6-6 team? Allowing 3 1st Downs? 50 pts scored? Pitching a shutout? Or because you've been told this is a down year and there are depth issues, UTM sucks, etc.?

The point I'm trying to make is that most of the folks who take a more "realistic" (some call it negative) view constantly make these sweeping statements based on what they read here or on other sites and not on the product that was on the field last night.

I don't have a clue how this season is going to turn out. What I do know. UT did a damn good job last night. And did just about everything that was asked of them. Period. Any sort of speculation beyond that is fruitless.

idc if people are positive or negative about tennessee or anything for that matter. but the problem i have is the poeple that attack others for being either way negative or way positive. who cares what someone else thinks? i mean if someone chooses to believe that this team goes 14-0 or 0-14 why does that bother you? why cant you just let people say what they want without having to "correct" them

A lot of folks are still shell-shocked over getting screwed overy by Lane Kiffin and his merry band of sub-human filth. Add to that, an ever-sinking level of mediocrity in the handfull of seasons leading up to this one, and you get a recipe for some cynical fans.

However, there's nothing wrong with feeling good about any win. Yes, it was UT-Martin, but any time I get to see the Vols play and hear Rocky Top over and over, it's a good day. We've got a long way to go, but I like to think we're on the right track again. Doesn't mean I think we are going undefeated or something, but I'll be pulling for the guys on every down, every play, and every minute of the rest of the season (and all those that I will see from now until I die). Go Big Orange! I love me some Tennessee football!!!!
