What's Wrong with Optimism?

Really?

I look around here and most of what I see is negativity.

"Oh, we won last night, but it was against a terrible team."
"We'll win 5 games at best this year."
etc.

I like to think we'll compete every year, no matter what. It's football. It's sport. Entertainment. Why do people watch sports?

To escape.

Why drag the negativity into something that's supposed to be fun? I curse and yell and get frustrated when we lose, when we make bad plays, when we underperform- but I still look forward to the next week and realize that everything will be just fine.

We are Tennessee fans, students, alumni... we follow one of the most storied and successful programs in the history of the game. Not many programs can make that claim.

Look forward to the next week. The passion and energy that swallows Neyland and the state of Tennessee and beyond is unlike anything else. Be glad you get to be a part of it and when we do lose or we do underperform, move on.

Just be happy to have the privilege to enjoy this team, and take every season you get to watch as a gift. The average person will only get 70 to remember.

This whole negativity thing is being way overplayed.

I guess some people prefer the bar be set so low it is at ground level, that way they can either say 'I told you so' or just not post anything again until they have something else negative to force feed people.

Every now and then you have someone man-up and say 'oops, wow I was proven wrong!' but those tend to be few and far between. So much easier for people to post doom'n'gloom on forums since they can simply avoid being called out on it later if/when proven wrong.

Fact of the matter is, FCS schools can cause headaches, UT-Martin played Auburn close enough to be tied in the 3rd qtr in 2008 and Ole Miss lost last night.

A 50-0 win is good no matter who it was against. All it takes is one single blown coverage or missed tackle to let the other team score, but we did the little things very well, especially for game #1! Especially given how bad we were supposidly supposed to be.

GREAT post OP (rockytop). History, pride, & tradition oozes out of every square inch of the University of Tennessee campus. I love being a Vol, and hate seeing people put down, or send out negative vibes about the program. It is what it is, and we will be fine in the near future.

somewhere in the middle between these two statements is about where most fans are.
Was what I posted really that extreme? Sure there are negative people out there, but most of what I have seen are just people saying "Calm down. It was UT-Martin."

Then you must lack reading comprehension, because since Kiffin left I've seen a lot of posts about how we're going to go 4-8, how Dooley sucks, and how Tennessee is terrible.

From our own damn fan base, no less.

What's wrong with optimism?...Reality.

We played and defeated UT Martin. There's no reason to get excited just yet.

didn't mean yours was extreme. I agree with those people who say it was only ut-martin, but I don't see a problem with a little optimism. Not saying you said there was a problem with it. I happen to agree with you that the negativity thing is a bit overplayed. I just feel like everyone is going around in circles and getting nowhere, with this whole negative positive debate. All I was saying that somewhere in the middle of the two extremes are where most fans MIGHT be found.

That's probably why I posted:
Sure there are negative people out there

All I'm saying is that this is a message board. Don't act shocked that there are differing viewpoints. It's not a garden club meeting.

I Iike what I saw, but I understand there will bumps in the road. Only critical thing that concerns me right now is if Wilcox is the deal, how long does he stay. I'm really impressed with the hire, but yes I do understand it's one game.

this. And while the argument that negativity equals reality holds most of the truth, there are times when I just avoid this board because the negativity is too overwhelming.

Because real men grumble about stuff and walk around with a tough guy scowl while acting like they never enjoy anything because they're above silly emotions because they're so DAMN HARD.

But you missed all the posts celebrating our 8-4 upwards of 11-1 season to come?

Completely overplayed.

It's like the OP doesn't want anyone to give an opinion on this board unless it's positive.

It's fine to have a little negativity. But hating on the program you're a "fan" of is downright stupid.

It's a game. Why be so ridiculously absorbed with downing everything as many are on here?
