What's With The Bristol Motor Speedway Obsession?

Just looked a visual of the speedway. The sight lines for football fans suck in a major way. It would have been a disaster when you look at that and think about traffic in and out of that place.

Good thing that we shunned that crappy hell hole to stay in our own football cathedral.

I live close to BMS.
Personally I think NASCAR sucks.

Keep football, football, and racing, racing.

To each his own.

I dislike being negative but, living close to the track and seeing all the bad things that go on, I cannot help it.
I have come to despise NASCAR.

Bristol Tn./Port O Potty TN. interchangable

while I agree with you. I hate when the race comes to town, and I don't even live in Bristol. On average Football fans are a better class of people.

So is a football game in the British Isles, but it has happened in the NFL, and is about to happen in CFB.

FB in the Isles is to increase the NFL's exposure and market share world wide. To some extent ND in Ireland also.

FB @ BMS increases........nothing.

lulz

The Patriots and Giants are pretty much the only teams that have played in London that might have a possibility of increasing the NFL's worldwide exposure and market share. This isn't the year 2000 anymore; having teams like the Rams and the Bucs visit Wembely isn't impressing anyone.

Notre Dame playing in China, well, is sort of a joke. Not only is it impossible to accurately gauge how many citizens of China are Catholic (suffice it to say that the number is in the low millions), but how many native Chinese actually know/remember when Notre Dame was a football brand? The recognition just isn't there.

A game between Virginia Tech and Tennessee at Bristol, however gimmicky as it is, would be a humongous deal for fans of each school. I can't even imagine how far the increased interest in the season and general sales of tickets/merchandise could spike just because of that one game if it were the kickoff. Sure, the rest of America doesn't really care, but it would absolutely be a primetime matchup and get a lot of eyes nationwide.

Oh, and getting $20 million each to play seems like an awesome deal for the schools.

I saw this question on twitter and it puzzles me.

"What is with the obsession of some Vols fans to play a game at Bristol Motor Speedway?"

Why would any Vols fan want to give up a home game in order to play a football game at Bristol Motor Speedway, when we have a cathedral for stadium?

Maybe we could get Buffalo again if we had a "neutral" site. :eek:hmy:

Like everyone else said, just no. Gimmick.

The only people that a game at BMS would serve, are those who stand to make money from such a game. The fans would not have nearly as good of a vantage point, the field would not be anywhere as near as good as Neyland would be, and the merchants that support UT would be hurt.

There is no good reason to ever play there.

This is true. Sadly the BMS is going the same way that UT football has over the last 4-6 years; that is down.

The once sold out NASCAR races are now history and they can't fill the place for either race. Bruton Smith has sucked the life (spelled M-O-N-E-Y) out of the track and changed the banking to appease NASCAR, not the fans.

We will see if the "new" configuration is truely a return to the "old" configuration. I doubt it is.

Get used to it, at both places.

I hear this crap from Vagina Tech fans all the time. I just laugh at 'em and tell 'em we already play to 100,000 every week, and they can go play in whatever gimmick game they want but we won't be a part of it.

IIRC, you could fit all of Neyland Stadium inside BMS with room to spare. As a venue, BMS would suck for football in every imaginable way.

My guess: A lot of southern people like NASCAR...and thus view this as a way of getting to combine two things they love, (maybe some see it as like having peanut butter and chocolate, or ice cream cake)

No. It's all about breaking attendance records.

If people would just think a little about the size differential and how far away the seats would be, they'd realize what a dumb idea this is. . The best seat in the house would be 75 yards from the field and at the ends of the track the game would be a rumor.

Exactly what I was thinking, the closest
Seats would essentially be like nosebleeds.

It would be cool. I would go.

And I think Bruton is about the fans or he would not have torn up the racetrack a second time. He is the biggest fan friendly owner out there IMO.

People are playing basketball games on ships and in football fields...I think it would be cool to have a football game with a twist on it. Being where Bristol is and the traditions Tech and UT has had...it would be great! Split it 50/50 down the middle. Would be amazing!

Same here. Tech fans have an inferiority complex when it comes to Tennessee. They want to badly prove they can beat us.

Not sure I agree but this isn't the forum for that discussion I guess. Bruton is all about himself and his millions and don't ever think he wouldn't teardown BMS and erect a new facility if he thought he could make more $$$ doing it. He is tied to the France family like a leech on their butts.

I think they proved they could be us when they kicked our a$$ a couple years ago. They might be from the ACC, but that doesn't diminish the fact that they ARE better than us.

Sorry for the repeat....somebody already beat me to the fact!

Which they did a couple years ago in a bowl game. Badly beat us if I remember correctly.

On the other hand, we played VaT in the Gator Bowl in 1994. VaT was ranked #17 and we were unranked. We spanked their a$$ 45-23 so we're 1-1 in records and a$$ kicking.

Did you black out on New Years Eve 2009 by any chance?

Seriously, though, I just want us to play you guys regularly. Geographically we're a perfect fit, there's already a pseudo-rivalry among fans, and with the new playoff system coming down the pike SoS will matter more than ever. I'd love to see a longstanding home and home series, but if it took playing at BMS to make it happen I'm onboard.
