Just heard on 99.1 that due to the basketball buyouts that the Athlethic Department needs to make-up $1 Million....so to help in that regard.... they are not sending the band to the Florida and LSU games this fall. Someone please tell me I didn't hear it correctly!!!!!! I wonder what else is being cut???? I'd rather up football ticket prices for a year or two (until the buyouts are paid for) than not have the PRIDE at either of those two games! I mean, it's only 2 of the biggest games all season. Give Me A Break! What was someone thinking????

:( :( <_< <_<

They are sending the pep band to those games. I think that band is about 1/3 the size of the complete one. I agree, it is embarassing to not be able to afford to send them all. Imagine if Peyton had only been able to lead the pep band instead of the whole thing.

Maybe we should take all the money out of Dickey's retirement or his "advisory" fee from the univ. It is, after all, his fault that the bball program had to pay out all that money.

I think that is one of the most rediculous things I have ever heard. We need that on the road. Its always good to hear the band to know that you do have someone behind you. I would cut cost somewhere else. Dont take them to Kentucky or Notre Dame or something like that.

Do you think we could somehow start a donation or fund raiser to help get the money?

What are you refering to swamp? UT does not have financial problems. UT was one of the last schools in the SEC to send the full band to ALL away games. UF also sends a pep band to some away games, so are the crocs in financial problems??

Yeah, yeah . . . . they had to take out a "loan", but it's not quite as grim as you make it sound. The Athletic Department was over budget because Buzz Peterson exercised a clause in his contract to take a one time lump sum buyout. To cover the payout, the Athletic Dept which has always been completely self funded, took a one time loan from the University's general fund.

It's not like they are on the verge of bankruptcy.

]A pretty good tip off that the NCAA was going to add another regular season football game came last month when it was revealed that the University of Tennessee has to borrow money to pay off fired basketball coach Buzz Peterson’s $1.39 million buyout.
Tennessee is one of the country’s most prosperous athletic programs playing in one of the largest football stadiums in the nation in 104,000-seat Neyland Stadium. Last year the Volunteers took in about $67 million in revenue from everything from ticket sales to television money to concessions.

At the end of the year Tennessee showed just a $10,310 profit.

“We’re trying to plan and budget better so we have a little better margin,” Bill Myers, chief financial officer for the UT athletic department, recently told the Knoxville News. He also added that he thought it would be difficult for Tennessee to ever end the year with the $1.4 million needed to cover Peterson’s buyout.

Escalating coaching salaries and fewer state appropriated dollars have created this culture in collegiate athletics and the trend doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon.

hmmmmm, 67 million $ and only a 10 k profit, , me thinks its a little more then buzz's buyout

Unlike the university of Florida, UT's athletic Dept. is self-funded(doesn't take money from the state) and as such is not in the profit business. Most top NCAA program are at the break even status. I have the facts to prove it and your own Orlando paper ran a breakdown of all Athletic Deparments income and expeditures. That little article you posted also doesn't tell you the difference between what UT gets for ticket donations which is far less than UF gets since UF doesn't allow grandfathered ticket holders and UT does.

Now the real reason UT is not taking the Full Band to Neyland South is uf whined that the winning QB always led UT's band in Rocky Top.

im not comparing UT to UF, i just asked if that newspaper article was the reason UT couldnt/was not going to bring their band down to G-ville...no need to get mad

Stinks that we're in this predicament -- I say make some cuts somewhere else, or bump prices a little if necessary. I think we NEED the full band on the road for big games. Nothing better than hearing a blast of Rocky Top in hostile territory.

I heard that Ainge has been working on his "conducting" skills.

I don't think that UT's athletic dept is in as bad of shape as it sounds, cuts? yes there are certainly some positions in the AD's office that could be eliminated, price bumping? H*** no! don't make fans pay for a stupid contract mistake!

Agree'!

The POTSL Band is as much of a crowd factor in BigTime games (on the road) none the less as you can have.
I realize some lousy coach came in stunk the place up and walked off with the cookie jar. But theres been alot of other area's that $$$ has been spent.
The new expansion to Neyland/Thompson indoor sports center. This should prove to be worthy in the long run.

But back to topic. Its almost unthinkable not to take the full band on those 2 major road games. There has got to be another way?

Hope this is re-thought out and a better choice is made as for cut's in the AD

Couldnt we cut to the Pep Band on the Notre Dame and Kentuck games? And take them to Tuscalooser, Gainesville, and Death Valley!!

Please
Neither one of those can hold a candle to OSU "The Best Damn Band in the Land"
The days when you could "arguably" call MDB an elite was before Dr. O. I watched them against Ole Miss in Bama and were embarressed.
