Ironically, it'll be Cuonzo's most ardent supporters who'll say things like "tourney next year" when Zo wasn't held to that standard at all.
They apparently can't see the difference in expecting year 3 with the players we had this year to be excellent from start to finish, with year 4 looking bright vs what we actually got.
Nothing wrong with Hart wanting the buy-out lowered with the overall state the program/roster was in and how year 4 and 5 were looking.
We can argue about this til the cows come home and probably won't agree at all.
But the bottom line is, Martin was offered at the bare minimum a year 4 here with a hefty raise, and an extra million on top of that 1.8 million if his year 4 program was so bad he'd have to be fired.
Getting 3 million for failing at your job would be sweet for any body.
The amount of rope DT is given will separate the frauds from the rational. He has three years to prove to me that he can cut it, for better or worse.
I do not get the point of letting CCM go for a guy like CDT when the chance he is the guy is nowhere near guaranteed. Could Tyndall succeed? Absolutely. But I would rather have kept CCM instead of going through another change at this point. The reasoning is basically "It doesn't seem like Martin is the guy so I'm gonna say bye and hire a mid major coach who has a solid resume but is far from a proven coach."
It's just dumb
But Zo inherited a better roster than Tyndall is inheriting.
This is the one concept that I wish everyone would try to understand. I knew there were going to be a lot of people happy with getting rid of Martin, but not nearly to the extent that it is. Nothing is a given, but stability is a good thing when your coach is keeping his W column larger than his L.I do not get the point of letting CCM go for a guy like CDT when the chance he is the guy is nowhere near guaranteed. I see it exactly opposite, even some of Martin's biggest defenders admitted he wasn't, in their opinion, the long term solution here.
With the roster we had this year, I believe Martin had peaked. The roster next year wasn't going to win many games for him. The 2015 recruiting has been a dead zone for months. There was no upside to tying UT to Martin with both a big raise and a big buy out.
But the bottom line is now and will forever be that Martin apparently didn't like it here, didn't have faith in himself or something. He had a contract with 4 years on it with the half million dollar raise. If he was confident and wanted to be here, he had good incentive to stay.
I think Tyndall or White have a better upside than Martin. To be honest, I think Tyndall has accomplished more than Martin has already. It's much harder to win big somewhere like Morehead than at UT.
People can say Martin inherited a bad roster. But he actually inherited very very good players. 3 All-SEC types and then he did a good job getting Stokes, but that was a once in a lifetime bit of luck that Stokes was even available at that time.
why? The precedent has been set. Read the threads
Martin would have had a winning record. 2015 looked really good actuallty.
I don't think Martin was the long term answer. But I don't know that he wasn't.
Basically letting Martin go for a guy with Tyndall and/or White's resume is dumb. You, on resume, have the same guy. Tyndall is most likely a slight upgrade, but you add the fact he has baggage and I don't understand why you let an average coach go who had won over 21 games a year for basically the same thing.
It's not that the precedent has been set, but it more about the unrealistic idiots that are setting them.
Look at it this way, we have played post season basketball 9 years in a row Under 2 different Coaches. It's a good run.
Making the NCAAT next year would be an overachieving, but the NIT might not be out of the question. Who knows.
But at this point, calling it a failure is dumb and I can only believe it is sarcasm.
I agree. I was just as mad as you about CCM being run to of town. He was a good coach IMO. But a good amount of vol fans disliked him. No matter how unwarranted this dislike may have been, and no matter how annoyed it made me. Tyndall had nothing to do with that and I don't think we should punish him for what happened to Zo, it's in the past now. This guy is a good coach, and he really wants to be at UT. That alone deserves him all of our support. Forget about Pearl, forget about Zo, forget about Hart's hiring ability (or lack thereof). Donnie Tyndall is our coach now, and he deserves 100% of our support. End of story.
We just ran off a coach who went to the sweet 16. Why are we now waiting another 3 years to get back to the tournament with the new guy?
Some of you are insane.
