i think turning down the best person for ad because of no previous ties to the school would be idiotic....there is a world outside of Knoxville that have won more championships.....we need to fight the tendency for hillbilly inbreeding....

Lets try this set of criteria - which is a major part of how they are evaluated by the NACDA

1. Success: How successful has the program been across ALL sports categories (championships, high rankings)?

2. Branding of Program: How big is the identity of the program at the national level?

3. Academic Integrity: What is the quality of life for student-athletes at the given university in regards to academic support and programs?

4. Revenues

In this day and age, the days of the head football coach "graduating" to the AD slot is a thing of the past. Look at Guys considered top ADs in the country...the position requires someone with a high business acumen (MBA), a history of proven success in University administration, a person who places a high priority on marketing the university, on academics and academic support, and yes, fund raising, and not just from the "big name" donors, but establishing new sources of revenue.

If this person can be found with ties to UT - great!...if not - great! ties to the program or past coaching experience matter exactly ZERO

People seem to forget that Mike Hamilton was part of the UT family for about 20 years...20 years!! To see he was an "outsider" is disingenuous at best. An Outsider, who fits the bill of the modern AD may be exactly what we need to take UT to the top of the NCAA once again and might just have a vision of how to get us there, and keep us there - a proactive, forward thinking AD, not one stuck in the past

Wasn't that long ago that successful football coaches were often ask to do double duty on the AD side. Most have opted for more accountability and individualized attention to detail. Sounds like that translates to a more business like approach and detail to organizational skills.

With those thoughts in mind, I would like to nominate, "audio boy."

Negative. Accountability in both directions is tops.

Everyone talks money in these debates, but to what end? We don't put the money back to the university so we end up buildings tear big monuments to sports in order to perpetuate the sports. Seems a very misguided direction to me.

They must have very strong puppet strings and extremely thick skin to make it here, cause they will get blamed for decisions they do not get to make....

Good business sense.
Courage to make the best hire regardless of popularity.
Courage to let someone go even if it isn't popular, but benefits the program.
Must be able to work the media in both good times and bad.
Must have enough confidence in those he hires to let them do their jobs.
Consistent. Be firm but fair with everyone when it comes to the rules. If you know something is going on that shouldn't, put a stop to it immediately regardless of who it is.
Thick skin. You're gonna catch hell a LOT if things aren't going great.
I don't think head coaching experience is a must, but some sports experience is. Either as an assistant or player. You need to know some of the insides of a sports program.
