According to the poll I ran, by FAR the most important quality for the next UT AD to have is past UT ties & respect for our school's traditions. It outdistanced the next most chosen qualities 3 to 1. Interestingly, no one mentioned prior coaching experience as the most important quality:

What is the Most Important Quality for the Next Tennessee Athletics Director To Have?

Past UT Ties & Respect for School Traditions
46.7%

Proven Track Record of Winning Championships
13.3%

CEO Experience in Business, Academics, or Athletics
6.7%

Clean Record Free of Any NCAA Violations
13.3%

Ability To Command Respect of Coaches
6.7%

Prior Coaching Experience
0.0%

Public Relations Skills with Alumni & Donors
13.3%

Buried in the story of naming Joan Cronan as interim AD was the real news, which is that she will retire next year, & that the new permanent AD will take over as AD for both men's & women's athletics almost as soon as they are hired.

Also, that position will for the first time carry the title of Vice Chancellor in addition to AD. It's all part of assimilating athletics into & under academics, something the faculty have long wanted, but not necessarily a good thing for an athletics department that gets no public funds & should maintain more autonomy, in my opinion.

what do UT ties and "respect for traditions" have to do with being a successful AD?

For me, the most important quality would be having a name other than "Phillip Fulmer".

I have a feeling I'm going to be gravely disappointed.

They have to want it

"Wanting it" is pointless without photographic evidence posted on Facebook. Only then can it be considered an important criteria.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but if this was Florida, I could care less about past connections to the school or traditions.

I care about an AD who can have our sports programs winning at a high level across the board.

You could care less, or couldn't care less? :). Common grammatical error

Proven Track Record of Winning Championships

Seriously, this should be number one.

Exactly. Set aside the above and hire the best candidate possible. Let him build the ties and develop the respect.

I hope that the next AD has more sack when it comes to hiring decisions. IMO Hamilton's CPA roots played too large a role in his hiring decisions, going on the cheap (and ironically paying through the nose on the backend). Its almost like he had an inferiority complex with going after big names.

Got to have a Tennessee tie somehow. Our team has been the best when the AD was a previous UT guy. Just sayin.

football was but he killed the bball program. That loyal UT guy I believe you're talking about also left the school to go coach at UF (his alma mater).

Remind me again how he's a UT guy

fund raising ability

Negative. Accountability in both directions is tops.

Everyone talks money in these debates, but to what end? We don't put the money back to the university so we end up buildings tear big monuments to sports in order to perpetuate the sports. Seems a very misguided direction to me.

I want a person who is going to win accross the board in all sports. Whether they are connected to UT or the University of Abu Dahbi is meaningless to me.
