Whats Knoxville known for?

I think Knox>Chatt overall. I actually feel the opposite about the downtown atmosphere. Granted 4 years ago I would feel the same as you. I lived in Chatt after a lot of the downtown "revitalization" happened and it was ahead of Knox but I now feel Knox has passed it. Just my opinion we all like different things. Now the aquarium and baseball stadium rival the best aspects of Knox, but overall I go with Knox. Also just seems a little bit bigger.

Chattanooga may have the aquarium and coolidge park but Knoxville has the Vols.

Knox>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Chattanooga.

Difference between Knoxville and Chattanooga is that Chattanooga actually has a plan for revitalizing their city. Chattanooga was a dump, but they have been systematically bulldozing their ghettos and reclaiming the land. Knoxville seemingly embraces their downtown ghettos. The leadership is not serving the city well, and hasn't been for some time.

where are the ghettos downtown?

I remember I was in a pub in Ireland and a guy from Wyoming asked me where I was from and I told him Knoxville. He immediately responded with, "I love Barley's pizza." That's all he really had to say about Knoxville. However, I did meet two English girls in Spain and I told them I was from Knoxville and all they could talk about was Neyland Stadium and how they did a soccer camp in Knoxville and felt that soccer in Knoxville was pretty awesome compared with the rest of the country.

Fifa 11=pregame gold.

Knoxville is known for having one of the most poorly designed road systems in the country.
I lived there for 7 years and ate at nearly every restaurant there. It's nothing you can't find in any other large city. You have folks who swear that one place or other is the best in the world while the next person says it's average or worse. Just go see for yourself. Don't set yourself up to be disappointed. Just because the parking lot is full doesn't mean the food is spectacular.

Litton's is the perfect example of overhype... The burgers are average and overpriced.

Rockaway Athletic Club in Columbia, SC has better burgers than anything Litton's or most any other place I've been to could ever lie about having.

Wow, I'm new to the board. It seems a lot of these Knoxville comments are based on the way things were 20, 10, even 5 years ago. The downtown area has made a dramatic turnaround. The boarded up buildings on Gay are nowhere close to as prominent as they used to be and are mostly in the 300 block. Market Square is now a vibrant destination with all kinds of restaurants, shops and nightclubs. The Old City is still a short walk away. Over time there's going to be the development on the south bank of the river. In addition to a clear vision, Chattanooga's downtown benefited from having a nice flood plain to build on. Knoxville's narrow river bank was long ago appropriated by UT and KUB.

The drive along Kingston Pike through Sequoyah Hills, onto Lyon's View by Cherokee Country Club, the neighborhoods along Westland and Northshore, and finally along Fort Loudon Lake is a beautiful drive in my opinion.

Many of you critics seem to be focusing on the way it used to be, or your distate of suburban sprawl. There's a lot of ugly in most downtowns. I agree that Knoxville has lagged behind many of its peer (including Chattanooga), but that's changing now. Unfortunately we're always going to suffer from the idiotic mismanagement and infighting that typified our local government for years. Fighting between the city and county governments stifled growth for years. Our former mayor, Victor Ashe, with subsequent "assistance" from our county government, resulted in the Knoxville Smokies moving 25 miles up the road.

Despite all that, the past few years under Haslam saw tremendous changes downtown.

It's not the best, but it's by far not the worst. And it's getting better everyday.

you have no idea what you are talking about

He sorta does.

how so? the city has been revitalized be the leadership of the current governor. downtown ghettos? have you even been to Knoxville in the past 4 years?

Chattanooga revitalization was funded by a slimey mayor that contracted all the construction to his private company.

Why yes, I currently live in Knoxville.

Also, Chattanooga's privatized construction projects arguably got the job done.

I've only been to Littons once, but I enjoyed it honestly. Never been to Ye Olde yet or Barleys

I haven't been to Litton's, but I hear they have the best burgers in Knoxville. I've also heard that they're just great all around.

I can account for Ye Olde. I've never been disappointed. My favorite there is the prime rib. Yes, one of the most expensive menu items, but it's a 16 ouncer IIRC and a ton of more food in sides.

Just make sure you get it RAAAAAARRRRRRE.
