What's Al Wilson up to these days?

Graduate Assistant vs Full Time Position

big difference

I just think it's best to leave former players out of the coaching of this team, unless the are previously proven as coaches. Smith just didn't have the ability to coach a group of guys, versus coaching one on one.

Just what a guy used to an NFL paycheck wants to do . . . go be a GA.

New NCAA rules will make GAs be three years or less removed from a undergrad degree, eliminating the practice of fired coaches and retired NFL players becoming GAs.

That doesn't make sense Eric. One guy not doing well does not mean that another guy won't. Each guy stands and falls on his own merits.

If he wanted to get started in coaching as a GA, he'd be an exceptional candidate.

A lot of difference between a 5x Pro Bowl and 2x All Pro and someone that played a couple years for the Titans and straight to being an assistant coach in college.

If he wants to coach, that's one place to start. He'd have the advantage of not needing the money.

Wasn't Smith the D-line coach for the Jets a year or two ago when their Defense pretty much took them to the playoffs?

I don't know, and you don't know that he would be. He maybe able to play the game, but I think we see that it's more about being able to play it and teach the technique on how you played it. It's about being a team player and knowing your X's and O's. If Al Wilson knows all of that, I'm sure he will be coaching at the college level soon enough. Besides, current rules changes keep him from even being consider for a GA position, IIRC.

I'm not sure about being a coach. But he's well qualified for a GA. We can't just throw a blanket over all former players like that regardless. Some of them are great candidates to become coaches.

It's kind of like hiring family per say. It's a sticky situation from the get go, and when it goes wrong, there are no winners in the whole situation.

Agree with this. Many times the best coaches are are not necessarily the best athletes. The lesser athletes have to depend more on technique and intelligence rather than athletic ability. Their attention to detail is definitely a great asset in being able to coach.

Being in the middle is kinda like being the qb of the defense, good leadership skills and the ability to read offenses comes with the territory of playing the position. If anyone who played defense in the pros could coach, you would think it would be MLB

I know Al Wilson loves the University of Tennessee. He will one day return in some form or fashion. IMO he hasn't proven himself as a competent coach to be offered a GA position. Lets not get hasty.

Im pretty sure if he wanted to be coaching at the moment he'd have a gig somewhere.
