What Win-Loss Record next season should Fulmer be asked to retire?

I pretty much expect option 3 at this point, and next off season we will be back in the same posture with part of the fanbase wanting a change and the other part saying that CPF deserves another year to right the ship.

Exactly how I feel Lawgator...it feels like our program is in a perpetual purgatory of mediocrity.

The problem is that you just don't have as much exciting going on as other schools in the conference. Yes, you have an interesting situation in Ainge, but after that its just a question of how much have you improved elsewhere with the same cast of characters (except that the Cut thing is set to potentially blossom for you).

USC has Spurrier getting that program in shape. Alabama has the Saban issue. UF has the spread-option and some marquise players that everyone is curious to see fit into that system. Just seems like there isn't the same ... expectation level, maybe ... coming from UT. More like this is still part of the big coma before the program wakes up in some fashion or another.

I cannot say that I am in complete agreement with this concept, but I do see where you are coming from and as much as it sickens me to say I think this is where getting a Jimmy Clausen would've really helped the program.

Well, I am sure it feels a bit different if you are a fan of the team. I imagine there are some angles you want to see and evaluate -- the no huddle possibly being one of them, right?

I'd like to see UT get itself a great running back, though I worry that it would have the perverse effect of preventing your offense from advancing in the scheme of things, know what I mean?

I really wish the staff had been aggressive about going after Noel Devine. I'd heard that he was looking at UT at one point, after the Fla schools shut him out I guess. Don't know if there was ever really any chance but IMO he was worth gambling on given the needs.

I should add that I'm not writing off Creer or Frazier. Just thought a lot of Devine's football abilities.

I would be willing to forgo some of the putative excitement of a wide-open offense in return for a punishing running game. Football is not that complicated. If you can run the ball and stop the run, you're going to win games. If you can run the ball, you can devastate people with play-action. I would feel a lot better about our new receiving corps this year if I knew they were going to have space to work in because defenses would have to be cheating up front to stop Jamal Lewis.

I'm not sure how much attention our staff gave Devine...he's definitely a rare talent...undersized, but electric.

I really can't find any room to critique this past recruiting class, even at the running back position. Lennon Creer is a great prospect...and he silently committed to the Vols back in September. It would have been awfully difficult to get both in the same class.

I can remember reading a lot of threads on other boards that were critical of his academics but I read a few articles where people close to him were saying he would qualify. I guess a lot of teams got weirded-out. Hopefully he'll have a good career.

I believe he has already qualified, but if you read his academic background I'm not sure how WV managed it.

Oh my goodness... can you imagine the firestorm that would have caused on here if Fulmer would have recruited Devine? I think Devine is a talent, but even I am kind of 50/50 about bringing him in. Sure, we need the talent at that position, but I also remember the discipline problems Fulmer has had recently.

Not sure I can really blame Fulmer for not going after Devine.

What are you basing that opinion on? His grade issues? The fact that he's a young father? We have guys on our current roster who already fit that description.

I'm not suggesting Devine is a choir boy, and he's got some attitude problems,but he's never been arrested...never been in any serious trouble. Why make him out to be worse than Pac Man?

Yeah, he's a father...so is Rob Meachem...so are several other former, current, and future Vols. I'm having trouble understanding how that makes him worse than Adam Jones. Devine's not a drinker, not a drug user, and has never been arrested. Perhaps you can't handle the truth.

I think Devine has an unfair and unfounded reputation for being a trouble-maker. Again, I'm not saying he's a choir boy...but, he's faced some tremendous challenges in his young age, and he's made a few mistakes. The future will reveal what type of person and player he becomes, but I'm glad he's getting a chance at WVU. With his skill and athleticism stirred into that offense, he may become a very special college football player.

he's not the father of just one child, but of several, so that's simply irresponsible parenting. if you cant understand how a 17 year fathering several children ot of wedlock or at all is poor decision making then I dont know what to tell you. I'm happy he's getting a chance as well since he has a few families to provide for right now. What I was originally trying to point out is that with Phil's history of letting players run wild and Devine's penchant for poor decisions it just smacks of disasters waiting to happen. I still dont think you can handle the truth
