To me,

Offense: a lot of run plays, run the clock down, minimize possessions for each team to give yourself a better shot and rest our depleted defense(mainly DT).

Defense: a lot of complex blitz schemes(I've read where Montori has been placed at the MLB position and just bull rushed the gap with all his might), and a lot of conservative play calling in coverage unless our D shows out early in the season and proves that they are able to prove they can cover man to man well enough to free up the safeties more.

Your thoughts?

Sounds pretty accurate to me. I expect to see a lot of high percentage short yardage passes to go with the runs.

sounds about right to me too....the more and more i read i feel good about this season..with the oline coming together and a young team to field the future only looks better, all the loom and gloom on here is redic...so what if they dont win every game as long as the boys are getting better they are a young group of guys..i look forward to the big orange the next few years...now lets get this season underway! go vols!

Sounds about right on offense. Saban plays ball control so I would imagine Dooley would take that from him. Not that he's the only coach in college football to do that but he seems to be the best at it.

If I was an opposing OL and I saw Montori Hughes coming at me like that with all he had, I might, MIGHT, piss my pants. Just sayin....

I think we have real weapons with substantial YAC potential at WR and TE. I'd like to an effective and robust short passing game. It helps our inexperienced QBs and run game.

Defense: I don't know if you can really coach turnovers, but if you can, I hope Wilcox does. We need to keep our defense healthy.

Establish the run. We will open up the passing playbook once our QBs start to "get it."

I think Wilcox is going to gamble a whole lot on D.

He'll get burnt some but they'll produce a lot of big plays too.

The O will be run right, run left, run up the middle, PA pass then repeat.

IIRC I read somewhere one of the receivers quoted as saying they were running more deep routes this year. I would imagine this is mainly to spread out the defense for the short passes and runs since we really don't know if our "large, yet inexperienced o-line" can give our qbs time to throw a deep ball.

I said a while back that TN's offense will resemble the one ran by Joey Matthews and A.J. Suggs with the short passes and wr screens. Poole will probably get around 20 carries a game with Oku getting 10 -12. Look to see around 33 points per game. However, our D will blitz a lot. We don't have the beef up front to slow most good teams. Look for Janzen to have more than 3-4 sacks. Austin Johnson may not start because Reveiz is a senior, and a fan favorite ( also a fine player ), but he will be the defensive newcomer of the year. He will barely edge out Eric Gordon, who will be all-SEC more than once before he leaves. It doesn't take a genius to realize that after Hughes, we don't have the beef to play base, and consistently stop the run against the best 6 teams on our schedule. We do have plenty of studs at end, that can make plays. Walker, Jackson, Williams, Miller, and Smith can all have more than 3 sacks this year. Keep them fresh and bring the heat Coach J. Wilcox. With the studs coming in on the O-line next year, don't be suprised to see A. Richardson be our next BA DT soon. Go Vols, and Ole Miss should be ashamed about the Massoli deal.

Kicking game is going to be huge, we have to win the field position game in order to help the defense or it's going to be a long season.

I can also see many games coming down to who has the better fg kicker.

If we will depend alot on running the ball we need 2 or 3 decent running backs. In the sec one back gets pounded on to much from week to week. I really like Poole but a man can only take so much......:hi:

Pray for touchbacks, a few three and outs a game for our defense and playing for field position.

I agree. But I do believe that we have a good stable of running backs to get the job done this year provided the oline holds up. Plus the fact that our rbs have a huge chip on their shoulder doesn't hurt either.

Agree with this... plus some 3 step drops- fades, skinny posts, quick outs, hooks, etc.

Pretty excited about Schofield. He sounds like the guy they'll saddle up and run behind.

The DT's outside of Hughes won't be asked to do alot more than occupy blockers and space. IMO, they'll gameplan around that weakness to take advantage of strengths at DE and LB.

Much of this season's success will depend on how well the coaches scheme around weaknesses. Fortunately Dooley and Wilcox in particular have a good amount of experience doing that.

Tennessee's offense will have to play to minimize mistakes. When you have a QB that's never taken a snap in the SEC, standing behind one of the youngest OLs in the NCAA, you're at risk for a lot of mistakes/turnovers.

So, on offense, UT will try to minimize their exposure to turnovers. This means avoiding using the pass during clear pass situations. So, I doubt you'll see UT throwing on 3rd and long unless they ABSOLUTELY have to. I think you'll see most passing done on 1st down, or in short yardage, but for the most part, UT will try to rely on the ground game, and will try to throw when the defense isn't sitting on it.

On defense, they have to take chances and cause turnovers. An offense with a young QB needs short fields. The defense will do everything possible to do just that. I doubt the unit will be good enough to just sit in a base coverage and dictate tempo at any rate. I think you'll see a lot of fire blitzes and stunts, designed to cause confusion up front and stuff the run.

It's kind of a double edged sword though, because when UT takes big chances, they can get burned, and they probably will by the better offensive teams in the league. But the great equalizer is turnovers. If UT can force turnovers and start on short fields, they have enough talent to beat anyone on the schedule unless injuries decimate them.

As far as the D is concerned, losing Dan Williams is going to be our most glaring issue. Yes, even moreso than losing Berry.

I agree and think that T. Williams will come on towards the middle of the season once he begins to trust his knee.

Ball Control, PA Passes, Short Slants, Screens. Safe stuff with a bomb every now and then just to keep it honest. I love that game. Opponents offense on the bench has hard time scoring.
