What will be the X factor against Michigan?

I know, cheesy title. But I really felt when we played Florida in the SEC tourney that J Rich's offense was/would've been the X factor. They doubled Stokes and McRae and forced J Rich to beat them, and he did not. He has been beating teams with his offense in the tourney.

Against UM, I think Barton's 3-point shooting will be the X factor. Because of the attention we command down low, with McRae, and the emergence of J Rich, Barton gets a lot of wide open 3s. I know people don't like watching him shoot, but if he's knocking them down then I think this game is ours, with our advantage down low.

If he takes shots within the flow of the offense he usually makes them. Especially of post kick outs. Agreed that he is the X factors

jrich, and whomever sets up in the corner and takes the 3 against UM 1-3-1. Hopefully we can break it down, hit shots from the wing and not have to shoot the corner shot.

Maymon v GRIII - tough and strong vs long and athletic. It's going to be a mismatch, but I'm not sure which way it goes.

Absolutely. The post kick outs are what I'm most specifically referring to. Even if he's hitting those, what I don't want to see is him taking "heat-check" 3s.

I think we will see a good bit of Armani Moore Friday. I don't know if Maymon can score enough on offense to counteract GRIII's offensive contribution. Of course, that really depends on GRIII showing up, which is a toss up. Sometimes he just floats around and you don't even realize he is playing. Let's hope for one of those games.

I don't think he wants to try to compete with Stokes and Maymon down low to grab any boards. Idk if Maymon can stay in front of GR3 though.

This is interesting to me. When we're on offense, I'm sure they'll want Morgan trying to slow down Stokes and GRIII guarding Maymon, but I'd imagine on defense we might try to switch that up.

Also, it should be fun watching J Rich guard Stauskas. Stauskas is underrated as a driver, but there's no denying that he is a shooter, first and foremost. If J Rich can do to Stauskas what he has been doing to everyone else, combined with the fact that we should be able to control the boards, I really like this matchup. They do have shooters across the board, though.

I agree. And sometimes he's on fire one half then disappears the next

I'm not sure you want to pull Stokes out of the middle and make him essentially guard a small forward. Seems like a good way to pick up some of those stupid hand check calls on drives. I'm worried that as soon as they see Maymon or Stokes on GRIII they are going to go clear out for Robinson. I'm also worried about Maymon losing Robinson because he isn't normally a perimeter defender. Maymon is going to have to punish Michigan on the offensive boards to counteract Robinson.

Good points. We cannot afford to have foul trouble on Stokes, or Maymon for that matter. As Drewtigeralum said, may be a game where we see a lot of Moore.

This is a matchup where AJ Davis could really help us. Unfortunately he has not developed to the point we need him at, yet.

I think relying heavily on Stokes and Maymon to eat up the interior on defense, allowing our guards to heavily defend the three point shot. From what I have seen or heard. Michigan loves and dies at the three point line.

We've been shooting something like 25% from 3 all tournament long. If we get hot AND have dominate the paint, good night Michigan.

Agree, perimeter defense is a must in this match up. When michigan goes to the 2-1-2 our guards can break it down with the dribble drive, shoot or dish. :yes:

I agree. The ones it seems to miss are the ones where he just gets the ball, and waits a few seconds and then decides to shoot, and he does it way too many times per game. When we run the ball inside out, he looks electric shooting 3's. He got in a pretty good flow coming out of the half against Mercer, which might have been the secondary X factor we were able to win that game by so much. we've come out of halfs sloppy, i got really nervous against umass when they closed our 19 point lead to 10 pts within in the first few minutes of the half.

Barton has to hit 3's and we have to get offensive boards, and I think we beat Michigan without too much trouble.

Michigan can shoot themselves into a big lead and turn around and shoot you into
the lead... Holding UM to 33% 3 pt shooting or lower on D will go a long way to a UT win...

Because of our rebounding, and assuming continuing good ft shooting and turnover rate, they'll have to shoot well from 3. The issue is, they have the ability to shoot very well from 3.

I said <35% earlier, so we have pretty close to the same number in mind.

Stokes and Maymon have to continue dominating the defensive and offensive boards. Michigan will get theirs but if they get no second chances we have a good shot.

Seeing as how Michigan is not a great rebounding team, I think if we can dominate the boards and control their 3 point shooting, much like we did vs. Mercer, we can beat Michigan. Pound the ball inside on offense to Stokes as Michigan's weakness is their defense inside the arc. Go Vols!
