I always think part of what influences fan opinion is what people thought before the season. If you thought 8-9 wins and playing relatively sound football on both sides of the ball, then of course you are disappointed.
If you thought there were major issues that could only be fixed by either time developing under the new staff or infusion of new talent, then you can’t be surprised.
Bobby Bowden once said that you only have so many “fire ups” in a season. Whether that should or shouldn’t be the case, that is a truth. The team is not going to be juiced up to play every week. And when you are an “ok” at best team, going out and giving a ho-hum effort is going to make you look bad (see Florida vs. Missouri, see Tennessee vs. Charlotte).
It happens. I don’t like it. You don’t like it. Nobody likes it.
But, where fans confuse me (and Gator fans are doing this right now) is that if you knew this thing was going to take time to turn around why go nuts about the parts of the team that you know are not going to have any part of turning this thing around? Example: A Buffalo Bills fan worried about the coaching staff concerning Josh Allen’s development makes sense. A Buffalo Bills fan ticked off at the coaching staff because of what Nate Peterman is doing is crazy.
When Tennessee is a championship contender again, very few, if any, of those guys in the current locker room are going to have any meaningful impact in contending. A lot of people talk about Bear Bryant and the Junction Boys. What they don’t mention is that the “Junction Boys” didn’t win squat. A bunch of guys Bryant bought and paid for to replace the guys Bryant ran off at Junction, TX, are what won Texas A&M a SWC title.
I don’t know whether Pruitt is the guy or not. All I know is you’re not going to be able to come close to figuring that out based on this season with what he has to work with.
