I always think part of what influences fan opinion is what people thought before the season. If you thought 8-9 wins and playing relatively sound football on both sides of the ball, then of course you are disappointed.

If you thought there were major issues that could only be fixed by either time developing under the new staff or infusion of new talent, then you can’t be surprised.

Bobby Bowden once said that you only have so many “fire ups” in a season. Whether that should or shouldn’t be the case, that is a truth. The team is not going to be juiced up to play every week. And when you are an “ok” at best team, going out and giving a ho-hum effort is going to make you look bad (see Florida vs. Missouri, see Tennessee vs. Charlotte).

It happens. I don’t like it. You don’t like it. Nobody likes it.

But, where fans confuse me (and Gator fans are doing this right now) is that if you knew this thing was going to take time to turn around why go nuts about the parts of the team that you know are not going to have any part of turning this thing around? Example: A Buffalo Bills fan worried about the coaching staff concerning Josh Allen’s development makes sense. A Buffalo Bills fan ticked off at the coaching staff because of what Nate Peterman is doing is crazy.

When Tennessee is a championship contender again, very few, if any, of those guys in the current locker room are going to have any meaningful impact in contending. A lot of people talk about Bear Bryant and the Junction Boys. What they don’t mention is that the “Junction Boys” didn’t win squat. A bunch of guys Bryant bought and paid for to replace the guys Bryant ran off at Junction, TX, are what won Texas A&M a SWC title.

I don’t know whether Pruitt is the guy or not. All I know is you’re not going to be able to come close to figuring that out based on this season with what he has to work with.

After Kiffin, Dooley and Jones I have lowered my expectations.

It's kind of sad that it takes filthy stinking rival fans to come over and explain this, but whatever works...(just playin of course) Point is, this is the truth. You don't struggle with Charlotte because of an incompetent new coach. Anybody that played highschool football at the level our recruits have typically played at should be able to backyard football- hulk smash a team such as Charlotte. You either don't care or you can't physically do it. Either way, it's going to require a personnel change. The players that care or have the skill to do it are obvious, the ones that don't are equally visible.

The way we competed against Georgia, Auburn, and South Carolina all on the road gives me reason for optimism. For whatever reason, this team plays better on the road this year.

I hate FL and their fans with every ounce of hate I can muster. It’s down right biblical.

But...

99, you arelevel-headed and offer good insight anytime you type. (In my opinion anyway) I appreciate that. I believe what you said is 100% correct.

Also, I’m just curious and not being a jerk at all. I really want to know, why do you post and hang out here like you do? I’ve never been to a different fan site nor do I ever want to. Just curious...

They're better than I thought, but depth and/or conditioning prove severely lacking from the 3rd quarter on. So far we have to be heartened by the improvement in injury occurrence. Also, JG has taken a page from Peyton's book and become quite the little stat queen, as other posts point out. Bad win/loss record, not beating the major rivals, but moving up the record charts at an impressive clip. He's gotten better.

Don't think I've ever heard Biblical as a descriptor for hate.

I agree with revjayp. I hate UF.
I also agree, begrudgingly, that 99gator is correct. (It is so difficult to agree with a gator fan.)
It is just too early to tell if Pruitt is "the guy." We will not know what we truly have until 2020. By then, a couple of seasons of recruits will have come and we will have a better idea of what we have as a coach.
As for 99gator, today, we are calling for you to give up the blue and become pure orange. We would welcome a sane, reasonable voice into the fold. You can give up speaking as an outsider and convert. The choir is singing...

I believe there are several who’ve been working on 99 to convert for a while. Lol.

I expected 5-7. After the first couple of games I thought 4-8, possibly even 3-9. After we beat Auburn I thought 6-6 and now I think 4-8 again. It’s a roller coaster season, my expectations were never crazy high but it doesn’t make it suck any less.

That is unkind to compare your bad performance against another sec team with our bad performance against a c-usa team. If I didn't know better, I would think you were trying to give us a backhanded insult. You act like Mizzou is an inferior team. Didn't look that way from what I saw of your game with them.:)

I think most of us just wanted to see clear improvement over last season. And when/if we go 4-8, it’s hard to make a case that Butch Jones wouldn’t have gone the same 4-8, or possibly better. And at that point, you have to wonder if firing him was worth it. Obviously, we’ll know in a couple of years. But you’d like to know right away.

Many don’t handle adversity very well at all so to keep from being disappointed they lower the expectation.

I believe that is a garbage way to live life in general.

Since you can’t get what you want, you stop wanting. Poor form.

Every loss should be a disappointment. That’s the nature of competition. Go into it fighting like heck to win and be disappointed when you don’t and be a gracious winner when you do.

Even against competition that is “better” you shouldn’t prepare for a loss but prepare in a way that gives you the best chance to win.

There is the process and the right way to play, but at some point to have a chance to stop the bleeding we will need to get more creative the rest of this season to make a bowl.

Making a bowl would be big for this team to get more practice.
