What we learned watching Bama vs South Carolina

I think that we learned that McElroy is a first year QB and can be confused by a good defensive coordinator. He also tends to stare down his receiver when he gets shook, and will throw into coverage. Other than a drive composed exclusively of Mark Ingram wildcat plays, Bama's offense didn't score a touchdown against Ole Miss or SC. Thus I think we can hold their offense.

We also learned that their defense is stout. It's hard to run up the middle. (Why did SC keep trying?) and with their speed it's going to be hard to run wide. (Maybe that's why!) Moving the pocket like we did against UGA is a start, but I think Nick will have something for that. (Did anyone see Bradford go down on a naked boot?) CLK has definitely been diverse in his game plans, so possibly a bevy of screens and counters?

I like our chances except for Special Teams. If we fix that I think we'll be in the game at the end, and for an unranked team in a rebuilding year against the #1 team on the road - that's all I can ask.

+1. Ingram will look VERY average in this game. If Saban is worried about any DC this year, it's Monte. Myer stated after our game that they limited their offense because they were concerned about what Monte would throw at them.

The best part about it, he has faced this type of offense for years. He has all kinds of run blitzes to throw at them. Ingram also has to worry about having the best Defensive player in college football hounding him. You know Monte will put him in position to blow up a lot of those runs you saw against the Cocks.

I actually think we have a slightly more explosive offense, as Hardesty is a threat to break one (quicker and shiftier than Ingram...yet runs with plenty of power), as is BB...who is a real threat in the passing game. Nuke is much more of a threat from the wildcat package. I think it all comes down to JC's composure.

This bye week helps us get a lot healthier, and go into the game with fewer bruises than Bamer (getting Vlad Richard back is crucial and he is well rested, of course).
If anyone gets worn down in the 4th qtr. it will be Bamer. That's why I hope to dickens, CLK throws the kitchen sink at Saban early, and we get a good lead on them so that they have to rely more on the passing game...going right into the strength of our D.

The subs have some size too...Dareus and Chapman rotate in a lot.

How does anyone actually see Crompton having success against Bama's secendary? We will need turnovers like they had against SC to have any chance.

Crompton needs to minimize mistakes. I don't think rolling out is going to work on Alabama. I think they are too fast for it. He's going to have to make good passes down the field.

I think that this is going to be a very low scoring game. Hopefully not like the 2005 game, but not too far off.

McElroy looked a version of Crompton vs UCLA... that offensive line won them the game... my grandmother could have rushed for a 100 plus with the holes they created for him.... my god is everyone quick to give Ingram the heisman... richardson was the one breaking tackles... not Ingram... bottom line is they are VERY beatable..... take away the pick 6 and thats a whole different game!

how about What we will learn,, we are rebuilding,bama's run game takes its toll big time in the second half,Crompton looks bad again against a MUCH better D than GA,Bama has had two weeks to discipline there players against the roll outs that worked so well for TN in the GA game,we are rebuilding,,or did I already say that.

Seriously though, even though Bama didn't look overly intimidating last night, I still think that when the Vols make the trip down to Bubba heaven, they will play much better. They are gonna be tough as hell to beat.

One think that gives me comfort is that we are coming off a bye week. We will be better rested and the coaches will have had time to add some wrinkles. It's Bama/Tennessee baby...Saturday can't get her soon enough.

I agree this will be a low scoring game, but it will only be low scoring if we dont turn ball over and give them great field position off special teams. Those are the two keys in my opinion. If we can control field position and make them go 70-80 yds every time then thats in our favor. If our O goes three and out and turns the ball over I see another version of TN and ARK 2006 taking place. I think Monte will have a plan for Alabama but that still leaves Crompton to make plays

I am almost willing to bet that part of UT's package will be to spy Ingram with Berry rather than just putting 8 guys "in the box". Similar effect but even as good as Ingram obviously is... I like Berry against him one on one like he was with Tebow.

Our offensive line is average. We will have fits keeping them off Compton. I believe He will get hit several times. How He handles that will determine if we have a chance to win.

I will preface this by saying hope is thin vs Bama. They are extraordinarily talented on D.

But here's how that happens. Bama gives up a little speed for size and especially in the interior. The game UT succeeded with vs UGA could be just the ticket (UGA similarly gives up a little speed for size on D). Run the zone plays and sweeps then PA and roll out off of that.

The best way to approach a big, strong D like Bama's is probably to make them defend the whole field from sideline to sideline and LOS to goal line.

Make no mistake, the bomb to Jones was a message and one that worked to perfection. Bama likes press coverage and pressure D. Misdirection and PA gives UT its best chance of success.

On D, I'll say what I said last week. McElroy is the weak link. Make him beat you and make him do it under pressure.

Any back that can run for 246 yards against another SEC team is extremely gifted. To think you must stop him first is solid logic. No one here is promoting him for Heisman, but to denigh his ability is not smart football.:hi:

Size is pretty much what UT needs for Bama to have. They need to zone block, influence block, and run alot of misdirection type plays. Once flow starts one way, small OL's actually gain the advantage if it suddenly starts back the other way.

I'm not predicting success because the players still have to execute against an excellent collection of athletes but the type of O UT ran against UGA is precisely the kind of O that Bama should be most vulnerable to.

we play to free ball jc has a very good game and both oline and dline play well and we run decent then we roll over tide ,we lost to auburn and kentucky beat them

I agree. Bama's O is average, McElroy seems to panic somewhat under pressure. They are not going to beat a Monte coached D just by running the football. I think McElroy will be forced to make throws to win this game!

Crompton doesn't need to play great, he just needs to minimize his mistakes. If he can not turn the ball over and convert a few 3rd downs, I will take it. This will be a low scoring field position battle.

I dont see a lot of differences in these two teams. Both good defensively, strong running games on Offense. Biggest differences being confidence, attitude, and special teams. They have the advantage in all these catagories. I believe we can overcome these disadvantages!

keys to winning on saturday:

1. make bama one dimensional. if we are to have any chance ingram and richardson have to held to less than 150 yds combined. i think dan williams will make his presence felt here. our defense will have to deal with mcelroy and their receivers.

2. on offense it will be hard to control the clock solely on the ground. we have to pray for the crompton vs UGA/WKU and not any other game. if we can establish a run game it opens up play action... crompton +/- 220 yds 1-2 TDs and NO ints

3. special teams. if we lose, this is what will most likely be the biggest reason. we have to cover kicks and not fumble on returns. we are due for a good week in this phase of the game(wishful thinking).

4. turnovers. if we win this crucial aspect then we are in the game. if we have more turnovers than them... blow out.

we do all these things and we will have a chance in the fourth quarter.
my prediction:
