1) Trae Golden has gotten himself into fantastic physical condition. He plays smart and defends his position well. He also knocked down some threes. He has clearly improved.

2) Maymon is an extremely smart basketball player. He rebounds well, and his passing was extremely impressive. He's going to be an asset this year.

3) McRae is going to be our leading scorer. He can score in bunches. However, like I said in an earlier thread, he's got to get more disciplined in his shot selection.

4.) We played excellent team defense. We shot less than 40% from the field yet won the game by nearly 30. That's excellent defense.

5.) We're not a good offensive team yet. It will be interesting to see how we look when we have a chance to run the motion. We can chalk up some of the disorganization up to not having practiced much against the zone.

All in all, this was a solid first game. This is about what everyone should have expected.

1) He better. He'll play 35 minutes a game. I don't know how much impact Washpun will have this season.

2) Maymon didn't even look like the same player. He was really impressive. He looked like an All-SEC player.

3) He's going to have to score. A lot. He's the only one who can create his own shot.

4) The D was good. The perimeter defense is the best I've seen since watching Vol basketball.

5) We scored 70+ against a strict zone defense and haven't practiced one iota of zone defense. That's good.

Washpun: is really small. He really plays hard though. He got himself into trouble offensively by overpenetrating. I think he'll get better as the year goes on and be a decent backup to Golden.

Richardson: He looks like he is athletically the most ready to play to me. He defends well and has a pretty decent stroke.

Menanjula (I'm confident that's spelled wrong): is very raw. He looks pretty athletic, but I don't see him helping us.

Miller: is big. He could add some bulk to the front court for us.

If I'm missing someone or something about a player, someone please fill it in.

Richardson was good i think he need to be more aggressive. I think his defense was ok. Washpun defense was solid but offensively has ways to go. Yemi had a few solid rebounds. The rest didnt get much time.

How did Chievous look?

Can Miller step up if Maymon gets in foul trouble?

If Chievous played, his play was not memorable. I don't recall anything. I'd say that Miller is more a backup for the 5. Maymon plays the 4.

Golden will not average 35 plus minutes a game. No player will in Martin's system. You can not maintain the high energy level needed on defense. This guy can flat out coach. Washpun will be fine. True freshman first game.

Might be a tad early to draw any conclusions, but how did the team discipline look compared to a Pearl team?

These two things impressed me a lot. For those of you who watched the game, was Golden the chief reason we beat the zone tonight or was it poor execution on C-N's part?

Either way, it's nice to have basketball back!

I didn't get to watch the game, so based on tonight, do you all think the 11th in the SEC was a fair judgement or do you think we will be better than projected?

They are more disciplined defensively. They rotate better. Offensively, it was tough to tell. They looked a little unorganized, but I think it had more to do with practicing very little against the zone.

Maymon was the key to the zone. He has an excellent feel at getting to the soft spot in the zone. He also passed effectively when he got the ball.

(6) Woolridge may emerge as a team leader on the court this season.

Or maybe not.

I think if we had Hopson and Harris back we would be a team to deal with under Martin. Its just my opinion.

Pleased with the result. Was hoping for a 25-30 point win, basically got what I wanted. Section 124 Postgame Report, sponsored by Pilot:

Officiating was deplorable tonight for both squads. Can't expect much more from an exhibition, but it's embarrassing.

McRae was simply great. Definitely will be the leading scorer, and, as you said, if he gets his shot selection under control he'll be an outstanding player.

Maymon somewhat shocked me tonight. Loved seeing the hustle and effort from him, we need a strong inside presence like that badly.

Golden started to impress me towards the end of last season and it showed up tonight. Nice game.

I'd honestly rather have Steven Pearl on this team than Renaldo Woolridge. At least Pearl hustles like a champ.

Washpun was pretty mediocre, but I'll chalk it up as it being his first game. If this continues to happen, then there's problems.

How refreshing is it to see a defensive style of basketball like this after watching the Rocky Pearl Horror Show last season?

Really, really like Makanjuola. It's going to take some time, but when he develops into his full potential he'll be a pretty darn good inside threat.

The announced attendance was slightly over 15K. If there were more than 10K in attendance, I'd be floored.

Halftime show, lol. "Angel....SHARKS!" guy was an overlooked highlight.

That's all I've got. Good game, and hope to see more strong defense against LMU.

1. Kenny Hall did not have a good game. Do not believe he has improved much.

2. Chievous did not play at all. Redshirt?
3. McRae was wild as a buck! he has talent but needs to play under control.

4. Maymon will help us but must become a better shooter.
5. Makanjula- will be real good in 2 years.
6. Golden is our most complete player. He can shoot and pass. He will become a good player for the vols.
7. Richardson very athletic. A year away for being a good player.
8. Washpun- raw. Quick, can jump out of the gym. Great defensive player and not so good on offense. I believe He is a year away from being a complete player.
9. Tatum about the same.
