What was John Kelly upset about that drew the un-sportsman flag?

Probably the frustration of suck and having a “drunk” captain at the helm. The crew has gave up on their ship and captain.

Don't know, but it's pretty easy to make a semi-accurate guess.

A defensive player did something egregious (face mask, punch in the nuts, something like that), and Kelly was pretty sure that the referee standing close by should've seen it and thrown a flag. When he didn't, Kelly's words were probably to the effect of, "are you f'in blind, ref? how could you not see that, you old idiot?"

You know, something like that.

It's all in the context.

Well I could have speculated also. Maybe Kelly thought the defender was the guy that knocked the headlight out on Kellys car.

Don’t know or care, it’s football stuff happens on every play. Total lack of discipline and self control!!
One of the many things that plague CBJ’s team,
He should of been sent to the locker room

Yeah, we suck. I'm probably the same age as that ref, give or take.

Excuse me, gotta go see if AARP has a discount for suicide kits. I'm clearly breathing too much of your generation's air. My softness is a real liability to you.

Headlights? Heh. Good idea to start this thread; you need the rest of us to help come up with reasonable guesses. :)

I mày be mistaken but it looked to me like a lineman stepped on him when he was down not long after that. I think they may have been playing dirty when he was on the ground and the refs may have been missing it.

Yeah! Always complaining about millineals but can’t even take some mean words.

It’s all a joke and in good fun. I like to poke fun at stupid things, and people complaining about generations is beyond dumb.

My daughters are big on keeping me between the lines when the whole millennials vs baby boomers vs gen X subject comes up. :)

Looked the guy stepped on him and has foot on him for a while. When I watched the replay I was thinking, “how did that guy just get away with that?” The ref has it coming for that.

p.s. We're giving Butch tons of grief for not being a championship-caliber coach (and he's not), but when I saw him talking to Kelly on the bench after that penalty, I was proud of him. Calm but firm, teaching John some lessons that are far bigger than just a game of football. Lessons about dealing with adversity, not letting emotions rule your actions, staying focused on the goal, etc. Real proud of him for that.

Not endorsing him as a football coach at this level, he's proven he is not up to that challenge. But proud of him for that particular bit of leadership on the sideline nonetheless.

McElwain chewed out the player on the sidelines, a few years ago (was that yr 1 at Fl?), and look where he is now.

Jones handled it this way, last nite, as you pointed out,

and Jones chewed out an assistant on the sidelines a few years ago -- so there's a sample of examples of Jones being calm and Jones being not calm,

and still, look at the condition of Jones' program in Yr 5.

If he's winless in SEC, then which extreme does Currie think is best for making an environment wherein these Student Athletes can be successful on the field.

I think at this point, Jones and Currie are thinking that it's better for these players in the long run to fight thru adversity (dealing with emotions of fans and learning to deal with losses) than it is to simply win (they're speaking about adversity, and building a new Neyland for the comfort of fans, rather than being able to speak about wins, whereas recruites like Cade Mays are, thru social media, telling Jones and Currie that coaches like Clemson are focusing on winning).

Rex, you got bogged down on the word "calm."

The point wasn't about "calm," it was about teaching life lessons. He could've done it energetically or sardonically or impulsively. Point is, he was teaching a young man how to be a mature man, a better person.

Kelly is pissed he decided to play for Tennessee. The frustration is now boiling over because he realized the attention he deserves will never be paid to him.

It’s about respect. Kelly could have talked to him sensibly.

I get that. But emotions and such. It’s not like he kept on and kept on. He said something rather short and went about his business. Ref shouldn’t let his feelings get in the way. It’s the same when a ref throws a flag at a coach because the coach is chewing him out over a bad call. Refs think they’re above everything and it’s silly.

No ref is going to tolerate what Kelly did nor should they have to. You don't show up a ref and then be surprised when they flag you. Shut up and play

Yes, and your point proves that Butch Jones is apparently good at working with young men in that regard, but he seems to be lacking the skilles necessary to lead a SEC team of Tennessee's caliber to winning on the field.

I mean, if you're in the plane heading to jump into enemy territory, do you want you Navigator to have spent the last 6 months learning the skills to train men how to jump and be champions of life AFTER the service, or

do you want him to have learned the skills to navigate to the correct spot where to jump?

We all know Butch is good with young men off the field (or, in your example, he's calm and collected teaching them how to better-respond to dirty plays on the field,in being a Coach), but as many are pointing out, we're beyond recognizing he lacks in the ability to add SEC-Wins to the record/to develop the men for what he's paid to do (to coach).

Or maybe, if he knew how to keep his key players healthy, or not-young, maybe he could win on the field, in the SEC. Year 5.

He came here taughting championships on-the-field, and (since, at the end of yr 4 and at the end of his favored-class he realized that's not possible) has turned the focus into "life" champions, instead.
