What was actually going on with our AD?

I seriously doubt this was done in a week. There would have been discussions going on between UNC and his agent for some period of time.

Not sure he has the personality to recruit and coach college kids. Rep is a crusty old fart. As an old fart myself I can’t relate to keeping a young girlfriend happy, but maybe he will be like the man in this joke on YouTube.

Belichik is just setting his son up for his future in football here. BB will coach a few years then retire and hand it over to his son

Unique set of circumstances here that the Vols did not enjoy in our coaching searches. Would be kind of like if Vince Dooley came to us and said I want to coach the Vols but I want Derek to take over when I retire.

Can only hope BBs kid is better than Dools was here.
There’s the real reason he’s taking this job. Setting his son up. I’ll be shocked if he’ll spend the energy it takes to recruit.

Belichick is a smart sucker, neck and neck with Peyton in football acumen. I watched Bill with Peyton & Eli last week. He hasn't lost a step. Saban's best Friend will hire a great staff and attract talented players. Who in the ACC ( Or College Football) can match Belichick's experience and record of achievement? And you know many former NFL Greats will be hanging out at Chapel Hill. Peyton will too. UNC just cut a big hog in the ass, Imo.

Reports are Belichick reached out to UNC and the UNC athletic director was not on board with it. The chancellor and members of the board pushed it through
I don't know about that. Bubba Cunningham is a seasoned AD who is highly thought of within the business. I can't see him being pushed around.

And not just high school kids. Have to recruit the transfer portal and re-recruit your existing players every year. They are now recruiting 24/7. Just don’t see Belicheck doing it.

He will delegate. With the number of staff Colleges can now have; "Consultants" ? NC will do well with Belichick.

UNC football isn’t anything close to the pressure cooker that we have at Tennessee. I can’t fault any ‘over the hill - has been’ for not being up to the task.

Like Deion, Belichick is a gimmick hire. Yes, it will grab headlines. Yes some recruits will be attracted to play for a Superbowl winning coach. But Belichick is 72 years old and his surly ass will not like recruiting high school kids and dealing with NIL/portal drama. Plus Tom Brady aint walking through that door again! This reminds me of when Bill Walsh coached Stanford after retiring from the 49'ers. It'll have a similar impact.
Belichick may be an ass, but imo he won’t have any trouble finding bright coordinators/staff members who can do the recruiting for him. His name will recruit by itself. I’m not sold this will be a disaster.

Belichick would have never left New England for a college job. So UT never had a shot at Bill. I think Belichick wanted the Dallas job, but when it seemed evident that Jerry was keeping McCarthy, Bill looked around and said, NC. Hmmmm.

I doubt that Belichick has forgotten how to coach football. AND, College Football just got more like the NFL. MOF, it is the NFL minor league with a big payroll.

When UT hired Dooley, Jones, and Pruitt, the administration was a circus clown car. When the wrestling match over leadership and guidance of UT concluded, Donde Plowman was Chancellor, Danny White was hired, and UT has righted itself.

Mike Hamilton was the big problem. He was great at raising $$$ but terrible at hiring coaches. We were still considered a Premier program at that time and he goofed on Kiffin first and then rush hired Dooley instead of going with a solid Interim coach and doing a full hiring process.

We then hired Dave Hart who was kind of a do nothing AD and a joke. Dave Hart and John Currie were both under the thumb of our boosters. I do feel a little for John Currie as he walked into a messed but he didn't handle it well.

Basically Mike Hamilton and Dave Hart were both disasterous ADs. Fulmer didn't help either with the Pruitt hire and mess up. We have a solid AD and a solid Chancellor now.

Regarding Belichick, it is still risky as he has no CFB coaching experience and the Patriots kind of fell of the map when Tom Brady moved away which makes me think Brady was a necessary ingredient in Belichick's success.

It will be interesting to see what the name alone does for recruiting.
Former NFL Greats hanging out all the time? Huge advantage. How can the "Best NFL Coach Ever" in terms of Super Bowl wins, not succeed in College? Who in the ACC would you hire over Bill B? yeah.

So, how in the world does the UNC athletics director go out and hire Bill Belichick in a week?

What exactly were we doing when we hired Dooley…….Jones……Schianoooope……Pruitt? Hell, at one point I was even thinking ol Phil was about to get his job back.

For the record, I’m perfectly happy and content with what Coach Josh has done for the Vols. Just blown away that they were able to pull that off at UNC. Do we have an official list of coaches we interviewed since 2008? Surely none of them were anywhere close to as high profile as Belichick….
I am not so sure that is a good hire for MC. They have tried hiring a coder coach who was pas his prime and , from his NFL record, they are likely making the same mistake. He may have 2-3 years of mild success, but it won't last for the long term. and he likely will leave the program in a mess.

Agree, this is the kind of hire that imo sounds really great on a message board but in reality is far from it.

Yes sometimes College coaches don't do well in the pros!

Agree he will just be the closer in the recruiting process. He will put on his smiley face, if he has one, use his past success and let his staff do all the dirty work. It can work.

They hired a washed up coach nobody wanted that won't succeed at UNC. That's the most Tennessee hire they could have made.
The only time we have gone the “washed up coach” route has been when we hired a basketball coach Texas had just fired who many Vols fans dubbed “Retirement Rick.”

That washed up coach is now coaching an undefeated number 1 team in his 10th year at Tennessee.

I heard that a condition was that his son would be named "coach in waiting". So, it's a heck of a safety net for a coach that might be near the end of the box.
