Everett Gholston has announced he is leaving Notre Dame. A very brief search shoes LSU may be interested. And obviously it is more than possible Braxton Miller and/or JT Barrett and/or Cardale Jones will leave Ohio state.

With the SEC in a down year as far as returning quarterbacks go, what do you guys predict? I think Bama could definitely pursue Miller and he would succeed there. Are any other SEC teams, specifically in the east, potential landing spots for these guys? And would it really matter for us?

Any SEC school unsettled at QB will be open to talented transfers, IMO. Golson and Miller could probably take their pick. Saban, Miles and others would likely pursue them aggressively.

Man, seems like Golson (sp?) has been in college forever. Wasn't it 3-4 years ago he was suspended from ND, only to return? And hasn' he already burned his redshirt year? Which means if he does transfer to another D1 program, he has to sit but it still counts as a year of eligibility used up, right? He can't have many of those left....

As for landing pads in the SEC, don't think it's a great concern for us. Wouldn't see any of them on the field until 2016, and by that point we have great potential for a D that can wreak havoc on even the most elite college QBs. Seriously, our D is going to be awesome this year...next year, it has the potential to be mind-shatteringly good.

EDIT: Ok, looked it up. Golson has graduated, so he can start immediately at another school. Looks like he has one year of eligibility left. Personall don't see him as a great catch, in any case.

Not so fast. Golson may not fit all the criteria to transfer to an SEC school and be immediately eligible. Turnover machine but still could do well with good coaching at Bama if he is able to get cleared.

IMO, Saban and Miles both would take a one-and-done if he fit their system. But I think Saban and Kiffin would rather land Miller.

It would affect us only marginally if it's a team we play this year; otherwise, not at all.

Wouldn't Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Auburn all be in the mix for a QB as well? They are all looking at starting a new guy...and yes I think I spelled his name wrong originally in the OP. haha My bad

I didn't think they usually had to sit anyway if it was OOC.

If a very good quarterback transferred to an SEC team opposing us, it could make a difference. Quite a few SEC teams are lacking in the QB position which makes their season's outcome questionable. We have a good QB that might become very good this coming season. It appears that we have a quality back up, as well.

Auburn has Jeremy Johnson. I highly doubt they're interested in another QB at this point. I could definitely see USC jr, UF, UGA, and LSU being interested though, even Bama. They've all got big question marks at that position going into this season.

I bet Miller or Golson will land at Bama. Coker was a gamble and I doubt he pans out.

Yeah, agreed. Point is, is Golson really that great a catch? I didn't follow his 7 or 8 years at Notre Dame that closely, but the best I can remember is: when he's hot, he's really very good, but he's too frequently not hot and is sometimes a disaster (turnovers, off-field problems, etc.). Don't know if that's good enough to put up with the scramble that comes with him not being there for spring camp (playing a huge game of catch-up not only on the system and playbook, but also getting to know the coaches, establishing some kind of meaningful level of trust with teammates, and on and on) ... he'd be climbing out of a serious deficit. Is he really that good? Worth all that? I personally doubt it.

Now Miller or one of the others from Ohio State, on the other hand....

p.s. Other_Guy, I think the only way for an undergrad transfer to avoid sitting a year--barring exceptional circumstances like family medical hardship transferring close to home with NCAA approval--is to drop down to division II or lower, even down to a JUCO. Not positive of that, but pretty sure that's how it works.

Not exactly.

Per the SEC's rules on graduate transfers, that suspension at Notre Dame means he and and SEC school would have to apply for/send a waiver to the SEC front offices and get that cleared for him to play immediately. Otherwise (if that doesn't get cleared by the offices), he still would have to sit a year.

Cool, thanks for the clarification, TrueOrange.

Bama would have absolutely no problem getting a waiver from Mike Slive before the end of June. Any other school would have to sacrifice blood and beg for mercy.

SCAR and UGA could be good landing spots for Golson, especially SCAR. The OBC has been rotating three QBs, with no clear starter, so Golson could be the answer. Both SCAR and UGA have SEC East implications, so anything that would make those games more challenging would affect us to some degree.

I think Miller to Bama makes sense if you are CNS. And I would love to see Gilson and the OBC together at South Carolina. Would be a good fit I think...but we would still own them.

I personally hope all those have qb problems this year, and get no help.

RegardingGolson, I agree about USCjr. Maybe even UGA. I'm guessing he has reservations about the old balls coach. Otherwise he seems to be a good fit and they've possibly got (probably) the sec's best WR in Cooper. I think Spurrier's ticked him off; maybe back when he picked ND over the chickens. UGA's new OC is uber conservative...not what Golson's looking for. Now LSU. They'd make out like bandits with this guy and he's already asked them to take him in. I'd say he's going to Baton rouge. As for Braxton Miller: He'd definitely start at alabubba and, with their stout OL and a bevy of receivers, plus he'd do well in Kiffin's system, he'd be crazy to stay in Columbus with the possibility of riding the pine. I'll go out on a limb and predict Braxton Miller's spending this coming fall in Tuscaloosa. How does their playing in the SEC affect our Vols? With a strong 1 & 2 at qb, and most likely either Jennings or Jones ready for disaster control by then, Butch has our qb lineup in an enviable situation. Whoever signs Golson and (if he transfers) Miller will become stronger at the qb spot, but I'll take JD & QD, et al, over all of 'em. Nice time filler before football time in Tennessee.

Golson cannot come to any SEC school due to SEC by laws in regards to his suspension at ND. He will most likely land at Texas. FYI... ND opens at home against Texas. Another reason he goes there.

14.1.15.1 SEC by law. Same one by law that kept Eric McKnight's transfer in basketball 2014 from Florida Gulf Coast.

I'm fine with this. I admit part of me does hope miller transfers to Bama though. I want to see that matchup of their offense and our defense.
