What to Expect from Your First UT Football Game

Hey gang... looking for some assistance.

My wife and I bought season tickets and sold all but the Alabama game before the season started (her idea... my wife = awesome). We'll be in Section N this Saturday cheering on the Vols.

Neither of us have been to a UT football game since we were probably 8-10 years old.

We're looking for advice on what to expect:
  • easiest way to sneak water bottles in (no, we don't drink heavily, I honestly just want to bring water)
  • where to park, how far of a walk is it, and how much does it cost? Not afraid of walking if it means less hassle.
  • what time are all of the traditions, and where? (Vol Walk, etc.)
  • what can we simply not miss? We're from east TN so we don't need to "see Knoxville" but if there are traditions going on around campus, we want to try to be there
  • how much does food/drink cost inside the stadium?
  • best place to grab a meal before the game/Vol Walk/traditions start
  • can you bring cameras in? (wife's parents went to the UAB game and said there was a sign or something?)
  • best place to get stadium gear (primarily shakers or whatever is the favorite thing to use at UT)
  • thoughts on an ESPN acronym sign? My wife is a teacher and plans to laminate it :rock:
  • anyone have a map of the area around the stadium that shows the parking areas, etc?
  • any other advice/what to expect?
We're leaving Birmingham Saturday morning, not sure what time we will be there, but will try to adjust our schedule to get there by the time all of the festivities start.

Appreciate the help.

Vol Walk is about 1 1/2 hours before the game.

Try your damnedest to see the Vol Navy

I like Gus's Good Times Deli it's right beside campus.

Get a flexi-flask and fill with water. It's easier than sneaking in bottles.

Cameras are allowed.

Get in the stadium about 20 minutes before kick-off

You'll pass several vendors to get gear on the way to the stadium

Food/drink inside the stadium is expensive.

Have fun, from a fan of another team who sees Neyland every other year, it is one of the better spectacles in all college football, especially for a night game. It's your only game of the year though, buy the water bottles at the stadium.

Actually, I think the vol walk is 2.5 hours before kickoff and the POTSB "salutes the hill" 1.5 hours before kickoff. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

if you're bringing in water bottles, show them to the police officer/CSO right after you get your tickets checked and make sure you emphasize that they are unopened and as long as you dont look like a crazy person or a terrorist you'll be ok. HOWEVER then immediately put them away b/c if the green shirt people see them, they will tell you they aren't allowed and will make you throw them away or drink them on the spot even after the UTPD tells you they are allowed, I know its retarded.... had a stupid argument with one of those green shirt people, really pissed me off. UT is just trying to make more petty money off concessions. FYI the green shirt people stand about 10 feet behind the cops.

I bought tickets for the UAB game in section N from a season ticket holder...I bet they were yours. Thanks!

Unless you are my in-laws, it wasn't my tickets. :)

So 2.5 hrs before kickoff is the Vol Walk followed by the POTSB Saluting the Hill at 1.5 hrs before hand.

Anything else? What station do you tune for radio coverage? Recommended?

Don't miss the Vol Walk. There is great tailgating scattered around campus. The G-10 garage is huge and full of mostly-amicable participants. The Vol Navy will be sparse, given the cooler temperatures. Parking is free in the downtown garages. It's a little bit of a walk, but either the Market Square or Gay Street garages should work fine, and they both put you close to some places to hang out after the game, if you're interested. I do not think that even unopened water bottles are allowed. Food and drink is overpriced ($3-4 for bottled water or cokes) and low-quality since Sodexho took over, but the Petros are good! As stated earlier: get there early enough to get in and see the band and the "T."

Above all, have fun and bring us much-needed luck and an upset win over Bama!
