We are not planning on staying so if we leave at 5 am Saturday from Knoxville would everyone think we could get there in plenty of time to tailgate?

You probably will not get home until 5 AM post game. A 24 hour gameday experience, neat.
Great point! We have friends up there who have offered to let us stay so we will probably just stay with them. Either way we were more worried about getting in traffic in the afternoon so that was why we looked at leaving that early.

If you leave at 10, you get there by noon. That's a good time to start IMO. But if you're a morning person and 5 a.m. doesn't sound miserable, go for it.

Getting out shouldn't be that bad either. They've got it down to a science and can clear a race crowd in just a couple of hours. A football crowd would go even better as many of the fans (V. Tech's that is) may start to trickle out a little early, while others (TN fans) may stick around the lots after the game to celebrate.

You'd be there in time for 7 am bloody marys.

Personally, I'd leave tomorrow, spend the next 90ish days at Farmer Bob's

I have been to many sold out races and getting in should be easy as everyone arrives at different times. Getting out will not be as bad as many think but trick is to park where you can head out in the direction you need and not have to pass track (field) on way out. if parking in large lots behind track if you get there early you may have a long wait out. 1st in last out. Go Vols! I can't wait.

For races, we'd usually leave around 830 or 9, stop and have a leisurely breakfast, then get up there around noon or so. Park and take our time from there.

Thanks for all of the info. I just want to ask everyone going to be very vigilant of all surroundings because of the terrorist stuff going on. This venue of the biggest college football game in history would be a good target for those animals. The only thing I can say is us southern folks will have guns to shoot back!

ISIS only picks on easy targets. 160k rednecks is their worst nightmare

Amen Brother! But we still need to be vigilant! I've been at war with them and they would rather pick on the innocent than face someone ready for them!

If you have friends there, I would suggest you go Friday night and spend the night with them. Getting to this ball game is not going to be anything like getting to a race in Bristol. I expect very heavy traffic and many parking issues.

I was about to say the same thing. I can't imagine that this event will be anything like they're used to. This event was basically put together for the sole purpose of breaking a crowd record. If you don't allot yourself some decent buffer time you might be disappointed.

Eh, I'm pretty sure the races in the early 2000s were just as packed if not more so than this game will be.

Granted, if someone has never been to an event there, adding an extra hour or two is never a bad idea.

This game won't outsell Bristol races from the early 2000s. Traffic will be no worse than usual. And it actually isn't that bad. No different than trying to head east on I-40 from Neyland in October.

(As in, if you take the time to learn secrets, it's almost easy. If you just stay on 11E/81, it's annoying, but not that bad. Contrary to belief there's life outside of Knoxville. BMS has been doing this literally for decades. The police know how to keep traffic flowing, the track is easily accessible to major roads and locals know to either A. Don't leave the house or B. Go on vacation the whole week.)

I was actually impressed leaving a few of those races back around 01-06ish time frame. They moved a bunch of people in a fair amount of time.

we always would go down Austin Springs Rd to Johnson City or took 394 and then went by the Airport and into Gray. Even without tricks, I've seen 150k attended races end at 4 and Piney Flats was clear by 6:30. Just the occasional RV/camper still rolling through.

Why do you think it will be different?

I'm not sure if they still do this, but they used to hold traffic on Volunteer Parkway for an hour after the race to allow pedestrians to cross it.

GBO!!!

I've been crossing Volunteer Parkway to get to our vehicles since 1986 and I've never seen that. They occasionally stopped traffic to allow pedestrians to cross, but never held it for an hour.
