What this game realistically means.

GA scored the most ever points on a TN team in their History today. Our D needs to tighten up the outside lanes & swarm to the ball carrier at top speed and not take the wrong angles at tackling. The D needs to create turnovers & the offense to take advantage of those turnovers at all cost to win. I still see us as a better team for the next game. We are only 3-2 right now & the Sun will still come up on Sunday which means that it's a new day...and all is NOT lost.

Correct. Only thing is, in the 1st half, the defense caused us the turnovers to keep us in the game. Ultimately, the defense gave up wayyyy to much, and lost us the game, but let's not turn the blind eye to the fact that they did stifle a Georgia Defense more than we think. The big play killed us, the growing pains of this defensive style.

I completely agree with your last line however, GBO!!!

I used future tense. Didn't say we've had a game that this applied to, except Georgia. We could have very well beat Georgia. We're going to be able to outscore Mizzou, S Car., and MSSU. We SHOULDN'T be able to beat S Car., at least from the way we played pre- Georgia. That's what I mean. People, please learn to read AND comprehend.

sorry i didnt comprehend your fantasy view of how you think the vols will play later in the season, we havent beaten anyone that we shouldnt have beat since dooley has been here so comprehend that.

Realistically after two SEC games we are out of the SEC east race and out of the SEC race. This is the third year in a row we have had no chance in our division after two conference games. We had 8 wins scheduled into this season and four games that were measuring stick games that matter.

D got out manned today on the big plays. Wasn't the same missed assignments, like last few games. That was hard to watch. I can live with missed assignments more than I can just getting blocked one on one on the outside several times for about 250 yards.

Sorry, dude, The offense doesn't get us wins--and we gave up 51 or whtaever the number was. I am not encouraged.

Well, Derek Dooley and Dave Hart do not care about your level of encouragement.

The defense is bad because they are adjusting to a brand new system and we are still very bad in the secondary. Our problems in the secondary have to do with a lack of talent and familiarity with the new system

Offense is improving, especially in the run game, and is becoming much more balanced. I am encouraged and finally, I am beginning to think this program is pointing in the correct direction.

IMO, we are still at least two years away from having the overall talent to compete for titles. That is reality.

It means , too me, that we are capable of playing with any team in the country. If Georgia is good enough to be #5 then we can play with anybody. Bottom line.

and btw, this is blatantly incorrect and absurd.

why is that... if u don't think bray lost us the game then u may have to rewatch it....4 turnovers 2 chances to tie it up and he failed on both!! worley's no better but still...had a chance to win a big game and bray couldn't finish!

Here's the deal. This is Dooley's 3rd year. There are no more "Moral Victories" like LSU was. The realistic take from this game is that the team is finally in a progressing mode. They have the experience and depth to finally be able to apply techniques and practice (I'm talking mainly everyone but Kickers and Secondary). We had 4 Major issues coming out of Florida: Running Game, Pass Protection, competing all 4 quarters, and Defense. We fixed 75 percent of our problems within a matter of 14 days. Now, this is not to say they were perfect, but the running game was the best that I've seen it in a good while, Bray was hurried some tonight, but had great protection, and we played all the way thru the game. Defense still looked suspect, but it's really on the big plays.

The defense is still confused, and the defense hasn't clicked for them yet. We have an offense that CAN get us the wins even if the defense struggles, which is what we expected from the beginning of the year.

The problem with our fans is they say "We're going to win 8 games max, and lose to this, this, and this team." Then, when we DO lose to that team, and it's by the slimmest of margins, they do nothing more but put this team down because they can't stand the reality. The REALITY is, what we said in the offseason is closer to true than what we're saying now. We're a team who's offense is going to have to win games for us. We're a team that still has a QB that, albeit is a Junior, has played less than 20 collegiate games (not even a sophomore that started from day 1 has this many games through 2 years). So, it's not realistic to expect him to be a finished product like Murray, who has played 3 or 4 years worth of football games.

Anyway, this is kind of the end of a rant in response to all of those posters who are pissed that we lost a game that, before the season, we didn't even belong in. Be upset with a loss, that's natural, and fine, but don't pretend there wasn't progress, and a lot of progress from 2 weeks ago. This team showed more progress in these 2 weeks than a Dooley team has showed in his 2 years. Offensive side of the ball has balance, these things take time. Everybody, finger off the trigger, ease down, and root your heart out for our boys who put it on the line every week!

GBO!!!!

a L is a L. he needs to start winning some of these or time for a new coach. soon our star players will be gone and we will be in real trouble. we are being out recruited by half the sec. don't really see your point here.

My point was that FINALLY, after 2+ years, we saw actual game improvement. So much so that we went from giving up to a top 25 team, to having a #5 team on its heels. I agree with EVERYTHING you said actually, my point is, we are GOING to start winning ball games as long as this improvement keeps up. Bray has NEVER been in that spot before, unless you count Vandy/UK last year. The team really has never been in that spot, and while a L is a L, the experience in this game we got is priceless. I felt like we turned a corner last night, and that bigger and better things are on the horizon for us.

I agree.

We go 5-3 in the SEC. I still believe that UF's defense is much better than UGA's. Our boys put up enough points against the #5 team in the land to keep the game well within reach against the SEC's most prolific offense. That is a good sign.

The only other game that is a "must lose" is Bama, and the fact that we will be such incredible underdogs, will probably be in our favor.

I will go on record now as saying that we beat MSU, SCAR, Mizzou, Vandy and KY. I am not saying that any of those games are "easy" wins. I am simply saying that our guys are improving, showing heart we haven't seen, and the running game is exponentially improving. If we show up to play, we should expect to win those games.

So many disparage our defense, and there are certainly problems with the transition that we are going through. However, for a team to keep giving up big plays, and not lose faith, or desire, shows me something I haven't seen in years. We have heart, we are learning, I am excited. If we had beaten UF, I bet you would have seen a similar fold under pressure at UGA.

A good friend of mine said it best yesterday when he said "sometimes you just gotta taste your own blood." We've done that, we've been hit in the mouth and know we can get back up off the mat and keep fighting. That is what I have seen out of our team.

And for that, I thank those boys who played their heart out yesterday.

The offense deserved a win today. Defense lost this game for us, cut and dry.

True that the defense gave up way too many yards. But it is also true that the defense scored a TD and took the ball away from Georgia numerous times, giving our offense good field position to score. Defense also gave offense a chance to win the game in the final minutes. There were positives and negatives on both sides. The thing is that the players know what they can do, and when they say they'll correct mistakes they are not just talking. This team won't be perfect in any of the remaining games, but it is getting better before our eyes. I thought we were going to win or at least score one more TD, but the offense just did not make it happen.

Nega vol means you love your Vols more than you love Derek Dooley. Look it up, it's in the dictionary.

so what win or two have we got that we shouldnt have? ga basically shut down the pass for tn which opened up our running game but it still wasnt enough to get the job done

T. Bray 24/45 for 281 and 2 TDs and 3 ints..

With the exception of a few 'freshman moments' on Brays part the passing game was good.. Those stats would have been evan better if not for a few drops, one of which (CP) would have gone for six..

I'm not sure I would call that shutting down the pass..

How about being a Vol... Look that up in the dictionary. That means supporting everyone on our team, staff included, for the full time they're here, regardless of how you feel about them.

It's like being a Patriot of America. You might not agree with what Obama or other government officials do, but you pray to go and root for them because it's in your best interest for them to do well.

Nega Vol means you wanna B*tch about something constantly, no matter what happens.

This is something people forget. It would have been 10x easier for the Defense to give up yesterday than the Offense, and they kept at it, and gave us chances when it mattered the most. I don't care if Lathers is a Senior, or McNeil is a freshman, they have both been running the 3-4 at Tennessee the same amount, and in that respect, are both equivalent in experience with this defense.

Good post, agreed with it all :loco:
